It has been another busy and rewarding term in Sports Academy.
Our Year 7 students have been developing their coaching skills and learning about different coaching styles, helping to strengthen their leadership and teamwork abilities. In theory lessons, they have been exploring respectful relationships, health promotion, and help-seeking behaviours.
Our Year 8 students have been participating in Touch Football to broaden their knowledge of different sports and to understand how transferable skills, such as throwing and catching, can be applied across games. They have also been engaging in units on sexual education and diversity - important and valuable topics for discussion and learning.
Our Year 9 students have recently completed their studies on the respiratory system and are now focusing on activity analysis. This has included exploring fitness components, training methods, and training principles. Students are now beginning to design their own individual training block, providing an opportunity to learn through movement while being introduced to key concepts from the VCE Physical Education syllabus.
Looking ahead, our Morning Academies are heading into their final term for 2025. If your child would like to join Soccer, Basketball, or Netball, please contact Elise Dowling (elise.dowling@education.vic.gov.au) or Kim Batish (kim.batish@education.vic.gov.au) to register for Term 4.
Morning Academies give students the chance to make new friends and develop their skills in a high-performance environment. They also foster a sense of connection and help students build important life skills, including punctuality, respect, and teamwork—supporting their growth both in and out of sport.
The Netball Academy, run by Inspire Netball, takes place on Monday and Thursday mornings from 7:00–8:20am. Students have been developing key netball skills while building confidence in their abilities. This term, they played a practice match against Parkdale SC, with another match scheduled against Mordialloc SC next term as their final competition for the year. These games provide students with a great opportunity to put into practice what they have been learning each morning.
This year also marked our first time competing in the Netball Victoria School Championships. It was a fantastic experience for students to test their skills against strong competition, receive valuable feedback, and identify areas for future development. A big thank you to Year 11 student Sophia Gatti, who volunteered her time to umpire on the day.
The Basketball Academy, run by Chase Basketball, takes place two mornings a week from 7:00–8:20am. At the beginning of the year, students are graded and placed into groups, allowing them to train at a level suited to their ability. Across the year, they focus on skill development, teamwork, and game sense, with tailored coaching to help each student progress and build confidence on the court.
Next term, students will have the opportunity to compete in the Chase Term 4 Tournament, where they will play against teams from other schools coached by Chase Basketball. This tournament is always a highlight of the year, giving students a chance to showcase their development, test themselves against strong competition, and enjoy the experience of representing our school in a fun and supportive environment.
The Soccer Academy, run by Futbal First, takes place on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:00–8:20am. This term, students have been training in both soccer and futsal, making the most of indoor options during the colder weather. With warmer conditions ahead, Term 4 promises plenty of opportunity to get back out on the pitch and continue developing skills in a full outdoor setting.
As this is the inaugural year of the Soccer Academy, we have been focusing on building strong foundations and connections with other schools. Plans are underway to organise practice matches to give students valuable game experience. In addition, we are in the process of entering a team into a tournament next year. This is an exciting opportunity that will allow students to showcase the skills and teamwork they have been developing throughout the program.
