Preparing the Way: Entering the Second Week of Advent
The Church is currently moving into the Second Week of Advent, having just celebrated the First Sunday of Advent on the weekend. This sacred time marks the true beginning of the New Liturgical Year, Year B, a time of both joyful anticipation for the birth of Christ and watchful preparation for His second coming.
The Second Sunday of Advent directs our gaze from the distant future to an immediate figure: John the Baptist.
The Message: The Gospel reading, often from the beginning of Mark's Gospel (Year B), features the voice of John crying out in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” He is the messenger sent to announce the imminent arrival of Jesus, calling all people to repentance and an inner cleaning of their hearts.
The Candle: The second candle lit on the Advent wreath is typically the "Bethlehem Candle" or the "Candle of Peace". This reminds us of the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and the promised peace that Christ's birth brings to the world.
Our Action: This week, we are called to be like John the Baptist—to look at the "wilderness" in our own hearts and remove the obstacles (like unkindness, worry, or distractions) so that Christ may truly enter and dwell there.
As we light the second candle and hear the voice of the Baptist, let us embrace the call to straighten our paths and live in active hope and peace.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
As we light the second candle of Advent,
we hear the voice crying out to prepare Your way.
Help us to clear paths in our hearts this week,
removing anything that separates us from You and from one another.
May the peace of Christ,
promised by Your coming,
fill our lives and guide our steps.
We pray through Christ our Lord.
Amen
