Year 6 Excursion

Our Year 6 students thoroughly enjoyed an unforgettable week-long excursion in Canberra!

They travelled down on Monday, 27th October ready for their adventures to begin on Tuesday! They visited to the Australian War Memorial, Old Parliament House, the Australian Electoral Education Centre, and the Royal Australian Mint, where they even minted their own coins.

On Wednesday, warmer weather greeted the group as they toured Parliament House with the opportunity to witness Parliament in session before heading to the Australian Institute of Sport for a swim and a tour of its world-class facilities.

The final day of exploring included the Australian National Museum, a scenic walk through the 108 embassy flags, and hands-on fun at Questacon followed by a drive through the National Arboretum and a laughter-filled games night. Our travellers returned home on Friday with wonderful memories and new experiences to treasure!

Thank you to the Australian Government who recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $135.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

St Mary’s Transition

Last Friday, St Mary’s College hosted their first full-day transition session for the Year 6 students who will be starting high school next year. The day began with students catching the school bus from Narrabri to Gunnedah which is an exciting first step in experiencing what it’s like to be a high school student!

Once they arrived at school, the students were divided into their sporting houses for next year and rotated through a range of activities. They were welcomed into classrooms alongside Year 9 students, meeting their teachers and taking part in Mathematics, Religious Education, and Sport lessons. They also enjoyed meeting students from other schools who will be commencing Year 7 next year as well.

WiiGaay - Learning Hub 2

Commencing last Monday, Andiah Walsh and Amalia Suckling attended the week-long WiiGaay Learning Hub held in Dubbo. This was their second Learning Hub for 2025.

The students enjoyed a range of rich learning experiences, including an engaging day of workshops focusing on digital technology. Leading up to the Learning Hub, Amalia and Andiah spent time developing and recording a short interview with local Elder, Aunty Charmaine Lamb. They used their new skills learnt during the workshop to edit and produce their video/interview.

The group also explored significant cultural sites around the Dubbo area, such as Scar Trees, Talbragar Reserve, and Terramungamine Reserve, learning about the stories and cultural importance of each place. A highlight of the week was an exciting day at the zoo, where they participated in the Rock, Sand and Tree workshop. They got up close with furry and scaly animals, fed giraffes, rode bikes and experienced the Savannah Safari Truck Tour.

To finish an incredible week, Thursday night saw our talented students, now official directors, walk the red carpet to premiere their interviews to the WiiGaay family. The evening ended with pizza and popcorn to celebrate their achievements.

Everyone returned home on Friday afternoon, eager to share their amazing experiences with family and friends.
