Recently grade 3/4 students attended a one night camp at Adanac CYC. One of our grade 4 students Cooper reflected on his time at camp and his thoughts are below, along with a range of photos from the camp.
School Camp 2023, CYC Adanac
At 8:30 am I arrived at school with my luggage, soon after I arrived I took my luggage to the hall. We had a camp discussion and our teachers took the roll.
Then when the buses arrived I departed the school on a Diamond Coaches bus. There were 2 buses, and I chose the smaller bus. Unfortunately, (not because of the driver) the ride was very uncomfortable and slow. The interior of the bus was light grey and gave me a paining headache.
When we arrived, we walked to the Adanac hall, where we told the expectations whilst we were having our morning tea. Soon after, the cabin groups were announced, my cabinmates were Edwin, Zac M and Ziggy. Luckily, I was in the cabin first so I chose the king single bed (the largest bed there).
We had lunch in the hall and then started our first activity. I was in group 2 and started off with camp cooking where we made damper which was amazingly delicious in my opinion. Our second activity was low ropes and beach volleyball, which I didn’t quite like. You required a spotter on either side who would catch you if you fell. Beach volleyball was enjoyable though, most of my teammates couldn’t hit the ball over the net, but I could. The opposing team had Bradley, a talented player who could easily hit the ball over the net like me. Next was archery, which I wasn’t particularly good at. I didn’t even come close to hitting the board with my arrow, which I thought was disappointing.
Dinner was at 6:00pm and the food was A.F.C (Adanac Fried Chicken) it was delicious and tender though it did have a very large flaw, they were soggy. At dinner, we were notified about the swooping plumber bird in the trees over the carpark, we were warned not to go there. The evening activity was the night walk, we hiked through the dense forest to the warm, bright campfire where we roasted marshmallows on a stick. We walked back through the same route.
The next morning we had everything out of the cabin at about 7:00am. One hour later was breakfast we had a choice of toast, cereal, yoghurt or porridge, I had 2 pieces of toast and a bowl of cornflakes. It was a delicious breakfast, but not much time to eat.
Our fourth rotation was hut building, were we built a hut out of sticks, logs and bark and when we finished, we all got inside and then Ms. Wang poured a bucked of cold water on the hut. Surprisingly, I didn’t get wet. Next, was canoeing it was very hard to go straight, I was Ziggy’s partner and his paddles do not have nearly enough power, while mine had too much power I had to go easy on the paddling. When we got to the other side of the lake, we raced back to the shore. After we raced, we went back to the other side and the instructor threw some ping pong balls on the lake and we had to try and scoop them up, using only the paddles. The last activity rotation was my favourite, best for last, the 135m flying fox I was up first, the instructor put my harness on and then let me go, “1,2,3, GO!” I stepped off the platform and… I loved it “Woohoo!” I bellowed. The boring part was walking back up. I had a second turn and acted like I was dead.
Lunch was hamburgers, now I usually don’t like hamburgers, but had this one anyways, it was the best burger I ever had, it came with American cheese and a sauce of choice, I chose the sriracha mayonnaise it wasn’t spicy at all.
The bus ride home was much better and more comfortable because it was a bigger bus. When we were back at school we waited for our parents to pick us up.
Camp was amazing, we participated in many enjoyable activities the food was delicious and the beds were very comfortable. It was a great camp.
