Child Safe Standard 9 – Keeping our school environment safe

Child Safe Standard 9 focuses on making sure that the physical and online environments at St Michael’s are safe for children and young people, while still allowing them to learn, explore, play and participate fully in school life.

At St Michael’s, this means we regularly consider potential risks in places such as classrooms, playgrounds, toilets, change areas, excursions and other school spaces. We also consider children’s safety when they are using digital technologies and online environments.

Our staff work to ensure that:

• children are appropriately supervised and school spaces are used safely;
• risks are identified and addressed without unnecessarily limiting children’s participation;
• online and digital environments are used in ways that protect children’s safety, privacy and wellbeing;
• child safety is considered when engaging contractors, external providers and other adults who work within our school environment; and
• children are encouraged to speak up if something or somewhere does not feel safe.

Every child has the right to feel safe at school—whether they are learning in a classroom, playing in the yard, attending an excursion or engaging online.

Each month for the next ten months we will spotlight each of the 11 Child Safety Standards. MACS has developed resources  to support a deepened understanding of the standards for parents and teachers and how they help support the safety of each child.
