Head of Sport Report
The term is moving very quickly and we are now into semi-finals for all sports except rugby. Congratulations to all our teams for a good season. It is great to see the enthusiasm many of our students have each week, especially when they are getting on a bus at 6:00am.
The rugby competition does not include finals therefore it continues until the 24th August. On this day, the teams will play at Macquarie Uni with a celebration of the season at the completion of the games.
All other sports will have presentation nights coming up before the end of the term. All players are required to attend presentation evening in full school uniform including blazers. This is a time to show your appreciation of the time that both your MIC and coaches have put into the success of your sporting season.
Congratulations
Netball
Last weekend a number of staff and students had the opportunity to attend the NSW Premier League Netball grand finals where Olivia Harris was a member of the Norths United team. It was exciting to see Olivia take the court as part of the starting team. She shot 100% as GA and certainly made the BMGS crew very proud. Unfortunately, after allowing the opposition take a 7 point lead early in the game United, despite being equal on the last 3 quarters with Liverpool, were unable to close the 7 point margin. Well done Olivia on your performance and we all look forward to attending some of your future representative games.

BMGS Netball
The conclusion of the Winter rounds is upon us and it is exciting to see three of our netball teams make the finals series. Well done to the Firsts’ and Junior teams who play this Saturday at Netball Central in their semi-finals, and a big congratulations to the Inter A team who have made it straight through to the Finals the following week! It would be great to see as many BMGS supporters on both weeks to support the players.
In other exciting news, Olivia Harris (Y12) played in her first Opens Premier League Grand Final on Sunday 11th August at Ken Rosewall Arena against South West Mounties Magic. Unfortunately, Mounties were too strong on the day beating North Shore United by 7 goals. Olivia should be most proud of her achievements to date and have done BMGS proud! We loved watching you play!
Firsts’ match reports:
Round 8: July 27th against Redlands (Loss 36-40)
This was the first game back in Term 3 and was against the very strong team at Redlands. We travelled over to Warriewood for the game.
We won against Redlands in our first round however we were facing Redlands in this game with a few girls out and a couple recovering from illness. We were very grateful to Poppy for helping us today.
The entire game was pretty much goal for goal. It was a very even game between both teams - with strong passing and the one percenters making all the difference. At half time it was even, at 3 quarter time it was still even. Redlands were able to make two turnovers at the end which made the difference and allowed them to take the win.
We fought hard and played hard. We contested the ball well and had a high shooting accuracy. We just didn’t manage to stand up to the fresh legs they had on the day with a full 10 player squad.
It was a well played, good game! We were all happy with our performance.
Round 9: August 3rd against Oxley (Loss 56-59)
This the last game at home for the Year 12's in our First team: Alannah, Kate, Olivia and Tarana. We ensured we took a moment to make sure we acknowledged our Year 12s and make sure they knew how proud and honoured we were to have them play for the school. We did this privately as a team, then made a human arch for them to run through for the start of the game.
We knew coming into this game it was going to be a tussle. Our last time against Oxley we lost by 6 points and it was incredibly physical and tough. We wanted to give it our all today - with discipline and class. We absolutely 1000% did that!
The first quarter was very, very close with us down at quarter time by 2 points. We dug deep and with determination and precision (as well as an amazing cheer squad) we managed to turn the tables and were up by a small 2 points at half time. We fought centre for centre for the second half of the game with some amazing skills from all our team - it was one of the best games we had seen this team play all season. With a late turnover and the luck of the last centre pass - Oxley managed to come up with the win.
Our BMGS team has improved as a team all through the year and showcased their talents and amazing netball skill today - in front of many of their families and friends. Congratulations girls - we are very proud of you all!
A special thank-you to our two umpires of our home games : Anna and Ms Coote! Without umpires - we simply don't have a game. They have been wonderful in their skill and fairness and we can't thank-you enough!
Round 10: August 10th against St Pauls (Win 44-55)
What I love about these games is the girls put everything into their game on the court and battle with fire and sheer determination, then off the court there are hugs and laughter with their friends (and team mates from other teams). Just wonderful spirit!
This was our Year 12s last round game ever! We all arrived a little earlier and had a great warm up led by none other than our Netball Captain and player Alannah. A little fun was had too making sure we were relaxed (actually...in all honesty...the team just really like each other and love spending time together!).
We hit the court for the start of the game against our friends' firing! We lost to St Pauls last time we played them so we had a score to settle. At the end of the first quarter it was 12-12. We had a great huddle and really positive talk from everyone kept the girls uplifted and motivated. We stuck to our usual game plan and had clarity on what we needed to do to pull ahead.
From this moment on, the team dominated. There was never any doubt that the girls would gain the win. They communicated well, went for every ball, had fabulous ball placement in passing and denied space consistently. We pulled away quarter by quarter: up by 6, then 9, and finally 11 for the win.
We didn't think we had a chance of reaching the semi finals, however we really brought our A game. In addition, we consistently had close games through the season with a very high goal average. As it turns out, this win set us up to land us a spot in the Semi finals! What an outstanding turn of events for this talented lovely team!
Thank-you to all the family and friends who have come to support our team this season - please ensure you keep it in your calendars for semi finals!
Inter A match reports:
Round 9: August 3rd against Oxley (Win 50-42)
Last time the Inter As played against this team it was their first win of the season - winning by 3 goals! Coming into this game they oozed confidence and finesse after consistent improvement.
You can see from the final score they extended their win range - they dominated this game right from the start. At the end of the first quarter, the girls played really hard and kept really strong - they were up by 7 goals.
We made some very minor tweaks purely to keep fresh legs and ensure the match up remained strong, and the girls were really receptive.
I loved the positive communication on the court and driving home the final mantra “we’re not tired!”… :)
The girls have really improved their definite movements, passing placement and court presence. They are supporting each other really well, and keep smiling while they’re at it which is wonderful to see. Many played positions they aren’t used to - no complaints and gave it their all. Thank-you!
The team won convincingly at the end of the game and of course were incredibly happy! This game included 7 players for that particular day - however all players have played an important role in getting to this point.
Well done team!
Opens Netball match report
The Opens team took the court for their final game against Redlands last Saturday. While they were missing a few players, they were fortunate to have the skills of players from the Inter's team: Amelie Emmerson, Poppy Peterson and Gabi McGee. Together, they formed great connections on court and the shooting team of Gretel and Poppy, along with Indigo and Celeste in circle defence made excellent inroads in the game, with Celeste getting some great intercepts and Gretel working her shooting space to keep her defenders out. In the end, the team did not get the win, but they had a wonderful game and a lot of fun on court!
A report from the MIC Football
Dear parents, students and supporters,
I am proud of the way our footballers have approached this season, and can now confirm that the following teams are vying for a finals berth in this week’s Semi-Final Round (17th August). Please make sure, if you are out and about, to come and support these teams:
- Junior Girls – Home BMGS game at 9am
- 13 Boys – Playing at 2pm at St Patricks College, Strathfield
- 14 Boys – Playing at 9am at Chevalier College, Burradoo
- First XI Boys and Second XI Boys – Playing at Central Coast Grammar School (11:15am and 10am respectively).
And a huge congratulations to the First XI Girls for finishing their season as minor premiers, advancing directly to the Grand Final (at 2pm on 24th August, Valentine Sports Park). This is the first girls football team to secure a grand final since 2019 (when the current year 12s were in year 7!)
I am looking forward to announcing the progression of more teams after this week’s semi-final round. Good luck everyone!
Mrs Sandie Naumann (MIC Football)
Match Reports
BMGS First XI Girls defeated St Pauls Grammar School (2 – 0)
For the last game of the regular season, we went into the game against St Pauls excited and focused. Despite having time setbacks, and a slow beginning, the girls played wonderfully, with Ash scoring a screamer of a goal that even the St Pauls coach was astounded by. Another goal was scored by Ellie, sealing a comfortable 2-0 win. We welcomed Mika to the team, who did exceptionally well in her first game ever! It was nice to have almost the full team back together, with the previous two games played with junior players playing up. We were able to form a coherent team that worked effectively together. We could not have been prouder of the season so far. With that win, we are minor premiers, and straight through to the finals! Congratulations girls!

BMGS Junior Girls drew against SACS (0 – 0)
The junior girls travelled to Moore Park to play SACS. With only 10 players the girls were happy to walk away with a draw. They had more chances than the opponents but were unable to convert these to goals. They were unlucky to not win. Good luck to the girls for this weekend’s home semi-final (9am at BMGS)!
BMGS 13 Boys defeated SACS (2 – 0)
Last time we played SACS we managed a narrow win in the pouring rain with no subs. This time is was clear morning on home turf. We found ourselves playing most of the first half in our half of the field. Through struggling to clear the ball, our defence held strong denying all attacks on goal, with Will being formidable in goals. Well done to Isaak, Wolfie, Wilbur, Carlyle and Jack for their defensive efforts. Harris, Kane, Jude and Patch played solid in the midfield as we slowly took control of the game with a signature attack on goal from Audius in the first half. In the second half, Isaak delivered a long-range goal from midfield to secure us the win. Congratulations on making the Semi-Finals boys!
BMGS 14 Boys were defeated by Oakhill College (2 – 3)
Towards the end of the first half Calvin played the ball up to Oli, who beat his man, and another defender. He was bolting towards goal but the defenders caught up to him. His shot deflected out for a corner. Paddy came across to take. He floated the ball in, the keeper missed it, no one was marking Oli at the back post and he tapped it in a fantastic set piece goal. We took the 1-0 lead into half time, absolutely buzzing. Will from the 13’s was called up to be our keeper for the second half. Oakhill seemed to be shocked that we had taken the lead, and came flying out of the blocks in the second half. Our rhythm was disrupted and players were adjusting to new and unfamiliar positions. Oakhill kept pushing our defence right from the start. One of their strikers picked up the ball outside the box and smashed it into the roof of the net just over Will. A miscommunication between the opposition keeper and defender, resulted in the defender heading the ball over the keeper who came out to catch the ball. Suddenly Thomas was through on goal with no defenders around him and he passed the ball into the net. We were all level at 2-2. It went to the last 5 minutes of the game. Oakhill had a pop shot at goal through a crowd of bodies, it just happened to slip through Will’s hands, a really unfortunate goal to succeed. Oakhill managed to see the game out to claim a 3-2 victory over us. An unfortunate result however, the fight and determination to get a result was so good to see. It shows how far we have come as a team and our potential to take the fight to anyone. I am really proud of the boys for this season no matter what happens over the coming weeks. I would like to thank Will from the 13’s for stepping up and doing a stellar job in really difficult circumstances.
BMGS Second XI drew against St Patricks College (1 – 1)
The boys were down to the bare bones due to injury and needed a positive result to keep their season alive. Going 1-0 down in the early stages was a wee bit scary, but these lads are resilient. They battled hard, moved the ball quickly and took control of the game. Chance after chance went begging but, eventually, the ball hit the back of the net and the lads drew 1-all. This result secured their semi-final spot and a trip to the Central Coast awaits. Thanks again to Toby from the 15's for filling in in goals for us.
BMGS First XI defeated Saint Spyridons (4 - 0)
A slightly damp Saturday morning welcomed St Spyridon to the mountains, as an extended warmup proceeded a much anticipated game for the Firsts boys. Communicating well at the back was Ben, Charlie, and Charlie, and a return from injury for goalkeeper Callum. This strong backline was helped by Nathan and Jed at fullback, keeping Sypros to just a single shot in the first half. A fired-up midfield of Connor, Jem, Jaiden, Tom and Zach connected with front-men Flynn and Harry to set up an opportunistic first goal for striker Flynn. Halftime followed as a neat passing move at the edge of the box set up second goal for Connor. As the flood gates opened, Flynn grabbed his second of the game, quickly followed by Zach's first goal of the season to cap off a terrific win 4-0.
BMGS First XI were defeated by St Patricks College (1 - 3)
Sitting at fourth on the ladder wanting points to keep finals hopes in our own hands, a fired up BMGS side hosted St Pats. The game started as a fiery competition, with tackles flying and fouls being called regularly, the physicality of the Pats boys were matched by a stoic backline of Charlie Monks, Ben, Jem and Nathan, weathering the early chances. The at times forceful physicality spilled into the heated battle for possession in the middle, as a St Pats midfielder saw red after a heated outburst before the end of a goalless half. Keeping their composure and demeanour, the boys flew out of the blocks in the second half, taking the most of the man advantage with early breakaways, and following a missed tackle by the Pats goalkeeper were awarded a penalty. After a lengthy delay of complaints and mind-games, Connor converted to give the boys a lead going into the final fifteen minutes. The man advantage didn't prove enough however, as a nicely slotted freekick and two breakaway goals crushed BMGS's efforts with minutes to go. Despite the challenges and tests presented by St Pats, the team showed excellent maturity and grit beyond their years and should be applauded for their composed sportsmanship throughout.
BMGS First XI were defeated by Oakhill College (0 - 4)
Still sitting fourth, with points enough to guarantee another game in the Central Coast, the boys were fired up from the disappointment from the previous week to see out their final home game of the season. A skilful Oakhill side started strong, snagging an early goal mirroring the reverse fixture, and sought to build momentum. Unfortunately for BMGS, much of the same ensued as Oakhill worked the ball quickly from the infrequent speculative attacks BMGS mustered to score their second. Playing much of the first half without the ball, the BMGS midfield and forward line pulled up their socks with a tireless press, as Oakhill grabbed another working through the lines. An inspired half time talk by coach Tom was shot down swiftly, as the winds in the BMGS sails faltered, after a fourth and fifth goal went in. Despite the result, the effort put in by the entire team was commendable, as only the Olympic marathoners seemed to have covered more distance. BMGS are finish fourth, earning an away semi-final in the Central Coast. Good luck!
