30th Sunday in Ordinary Time- Sunday 25th October

In this week’s Gospel, we read about a time when some religious people went to Jesus to ask him about rules. One person asked this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”  And then, Jesus gave another important rule. He said, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

The commandments are what God asks us to live by. When we love God and other people with our entire self- our heart, soul and mind we can make a difference to the lives of others.

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with

all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: you must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang     the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’

Thank you for being a loving and gracious God.

Thank you for offering us forgiveness

and the gift of new life in you.

We pray that our lives would be filled and overflowing

with the power of your love.

We ask that your Spirit will guide us each day,

so that we can make a difference

in this world and bring honour to you.

Amen

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. The Rosary draws its mysteries from the New Testament, with each decade referring to an event in the lives of Jesus and Mary.

The Mysteries of the Rosary

The Joyful Mysteries are taken mostly from Saint Luke’s Gospel in the New Testament.

They involve the joyful events of Jesus’ childhood; The Annunciation, The Visitation, The Nativity of Jesus, The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, The Finding of Jesus in the Temple.

The Luminous Mysteries (Mysteries of Light) bring a deeper understanding to the public life of Jesus. From the childhood of Jesus and His ministry; The Baptism of Jesus, The Wedding at Cana, Jesus announces God’s Kingdom, The Transfiguration, Jesus Gives us the Holy Eucharist.

The Sorrowful Mysteries remind us of how much Jesus loves us. They recall how He

suffered and died for us; The Agony in the Garden, The Scourging at the Pillar, The Crowning of Thorns, The Carrying of the Cross, The Crucifixion.

All Hallows' Eve (Hallowe'en)

All Hallows' Eve, or Halloween, is the vigil of the ‘Feast of All Saints’ in the Catholic Church. It's a religious observance that begins the three-day period of Allhallowtide, which  is a three-day Catholic season that honours saints and the faithful                                                        departed.

All Saints’ Day (Saturday November 1st)

All Saints’ Day, which is also known as All Hallows' Day or Hallowmas) is the day after All Hallow’s Eve. On this day we celebrate the communion of saints- the union of prayer and love between ourselves and the saints in heaven. Saints names are in prayer books and their pictures are on the walls and windows of churches. Their stories teach us that there are many ways to follow Christ.

All Souls’ Day (Sunday November 2nd)

November 2nd is All Souls’ Day, a time for the Christian community to pray for all those who have died. We especially remember the deceased members of our families at this time.  May they rest in peace.
