Student Wellbeing

Mrs Rebecca Beveridge

What a busy few weeks of Term 4 we have had so much fun! We at St Joseph's are so proud of all the students for the amount of Resilience they have shown, especially when performing in our production of Shrek! We are so excited to spend the next few weeks in the classroom together, not long now until the end of another great year!

Exciting upcoming project!

In Friendship groups last week, each Friendship group was given an area in the school that needed a bit of TLC!! We noticed that a few of our outside objects such as chairs and poles were looking a bit boring, so we thought, why not get the kids to make them look much better!! In Friendship groups, students worked together to create some designs of things they believed would make our school an even more bright and happy place! From there the grade 6 leaders took all of their group's ideas and minimised them down to fit their designated areas. With a special thanks to Anthony for helping sand down these areas, the 5/6 students started to paint them yesterday! We are looking forward to seeing the final product and are hoping that these areas become a special place that welcomes all the special and important qualities of friendship!

Here is the process so far......

Resilience

Last week we decided to have a big focus on Resilience for our PBL lesson and focus! The choice of paying extra attention to Resilience was around the fact that we are around report writing time and students have currently been doing a lot of different assessments. The grade 3/4 student created this wonderful tree which contains beautiful and resilient messages, strategies of how to be more resilient as well and I believe statements. This is a wonderful thing to have in the classroom so that children can look back on this and give themselves those words of encouragement!

What makes a good friend?

In Foundation, they have been talking about what makes a good friend and how can you be a good friend when things go wrong. The Foundation students identified ways they can be a good friends such as helping, caring or playing with others. They also talked about different strategies they could use in times of need. How wonderful are these cute hearts they created!!

Headspace- transition session for grade 6's

Last week the grade 6 students had a transition session, presented by Headspace. During the session, the grade 6 students spoke about the worries they may be feeling thinking about going to high school, discussed the difference in homework and expectations and much more. The grade 6 students were given skills and ideas that made them think about strategies they could use to feel more confident going to high school as well as the things they can do to keep them feeling healthy such as getting enough sleep!

There is a range of supports out there that are available to students and their families such as Headspace, Beyond Blue, ESafety Commissioner, Reach Out, Butterfly and Kids Helpline.

There are some fantastic resources on 'BeYou' for families to use, to help your child have a smooth transition to a new learning environment.

Please feel free to reach out whenever you may need and I wish you all a lovely weekend!
