Catholic Social Justice Sunday

On Sunday 30th August, the Catholic Church in Australia celebrates Social Justice Sunday, a day that reminds us of our responsibility to care for others and work towards a more just and compassionate society. 

The Australian Catholic Bishops have been sharing an annual Social Justice Statement since 1940, inviting us to reflect on important social issues and respond through faith and action. This year's statement, The Cost of Our Living: Economic and Social Justice for the Common Good, calls us to recognise the challenges many people face with the rising cost of everyday necessities and to respond with generosity, compassion and practical support. 

As members of the St Michael's community, we can make a difference by noticing when others need help, sharing what we have, including others, and treating every person with dignity and respect.

Season of Creation 1st Sept-4th Oct 2026

The Season of Creation, celebrated from 1st September to 4th October, is a special time when Christians around the world come together in prayer and action to celebrate God's creation and care for our common home. It began in 1989 when Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I established 1 September as a day of prayer for creation, and was later extended to 4 October, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi. 

Pope Francis formally recognised the season within the Catholic Church in 2015. 

This year is especially meaningful as we continue to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis, whose deep love for God's creation continues to inspire Christians to care for our world. 

During this season, we are encouraged to pray, give thanks for the beauty of creation and consider simple ways we can care for our common home.
