2nd XI Blue
SPC Blue 1/121 def Ballarat Grammar 6/120
Winning the all-important toss, SPC Blue Captain Will Steenhuis made the quick call to bowl on what appeared to be a good bowling wicket with a lush outfield to assist the fielding side. Having faced the onslaught of the Ballarat Grammar openers only two weeks ago, it was a two-pronged game plan of either take wickets or restrict the run flow as much as possible.
With a full side for the mid-season BAS Second XI Grand Final, this would raise our chances significantly as less gaps in the field makes it easier to stop runs. SPC Blue got off to a great start with the first Grammar wicket falling in the fifth over to see Ballarat Grammar at 1/14 bowled by Aayush Ahlawat. Batsman three showed quality stroke play before he was finally removed by Ethan Bartlett, LBW for 26. Ballarat Grammar now 2/83 in the 14th over. Batsman four, after a huge six was put over the fence of Hill Oval tried for a quick single and was run out next ball, Ballarat Grammar now 3/95 in the 16th over.
Once again, the key opening batsman for Grammar had taken the willow to the SPC boys, going on to score a well-constructed 60 before finally meeting his match with a cunning Ben Buckland delivery to have him caught in the outfield, Ballarat Grammar now 4/95 in the 17th over. Tyler Vanderwert chipped in to capture wicket five, Ballarat Grammar now 5/96 in the 18th over. A flurry of runs then followed until Aayush Ahlawat, on the last ball of the Ballarat Grammar innings, bowled batsman seven to see the Ballarat Grammar innings concluded at 6/120 off their full 20 overs. So, the run chase was simple, it had to be around a run a ball if SPC Blue were to be the mid-season Grand Final winners. Our final bowling figures were Aayush Ahlawat 2/16 off 4 overs, Tyler Vanderwert 1/17 off 3 overs, Ethan Bartlett 1/25 off 4 overs and Ben Buckland 1/24 off 4 overs.
In reply, Ryan Cook and Zac Symons opened the innings for SPC Blue and what a picture-perfect start these boys offered to all spectators able to attend the match. Ryan Cook was the first to go, amassing a very solid 36, which included fantastic shots to all parts of Hill Oval. He provided numerous quick singles which kept rotating the strike, well-placed doubles and three well struck fours before being caught trying to maintain the run chase momentum. SPC Blue 1/107 in the 14th over and in control. Will Steenhuis and Zac Symons then came together to see the game out without any further wicket loss to SPC Blue. Will Steenhuis remaining on 4 Not Out and the most outstanding opening batting performance of Zac Symons who carved 74 Not Out which included one six, nine fours and every other possible scoring shot a batsman can make to see SPC Blue victorious in the BAS Second XI mid-season Grand Final 1/121 in the 18th over.
Congratulations to the follow boys who represented the SPC Blue side today, and I look forward to keeping this side together as we restart in Term One 2025:
Will Steenhuis
Ryan Cook
Zac Symons
Aayush Ahlawat
Ethan Bartlett
Ben Buckland

Some of our finest young basketballers are travelling to the USA to play against some high schools and to experience some of the East Coast’s finest sporting events. The tour will run from Friday, 6 December to Sunday, 22 December.
Thank you to staff members Jarrod Fryar, Eric Hayes and Jarrett Giampaolo travelling with and coaching the boys. Also, a huge thankyou to Head of Basketball Josh Ebbels who has put in countless hours of work to get this trip off the ground.
This year was another successful year for Volleyball at SPC. In Term One, the Senior SPC team played in the BAS grand final. SPC came out with a solid win and that meant that SPC are now winners of BAS Volleyball for three years in a row – a fantastic result for the team.
In May, 10 senior SPC boys were taken to the Victorian Volleyball Schools Cup at MSAC to compete in the Division 1 competition, a step up from the last year where they played in Division 2. They finished at the top of their pool undefeated after the round robin phase. They won their quarter final match but were unable to make it to the gold medal match, going down to the eventual winners in the semi-finals. This is a strong result for SPC Volleyball, finishing in the top four at state for the last three years.
In Term 4, the Junior/Intermediate competition allowed many new students to try competitive volleyball for the first time. The SPC team finished in the middle of the table with two wins and two losses. Many boys are looking forward to playing next year, with the year 9 students stepping up to the Senior competition. Well done to all players! Both coaches are looking forward to seeing how the players progress in the coming years.
