Staff vs Student FEUD

We surveyed over 200 students at the College and pitted the most competitive students against the teachers at HGC. Based on the famous TV show Family Feud hosted by Steve Harvey, HGC has put together a competition between Year 12 students and teachers. Currently, the students have fallen behind the teachers due to a massive wipeout during round one and continuous large-margin losses.

At the end of round five, the senior year level leaders stand at the top of the table with a massive 514 points, leading the teachers by 3 wins and 1719 points, compared to the students' meagre 2 wins and 1029 points. 

The Year 12 students have 4 more rounds to close the near 700-point gap and become victorious over the various staff members who have given up their lunchtimes to participate in Family Feud.

Survey questions included “Name an excuse a student would have for not doing their homework”, with “Dog ate it” as the top answer, and many more hilarious responses for each question. Family Feud runs every Friday lunchtime in the PAC until the end of term.

At the end of round eight, the highest-scoring team, student or staff, will face off against the College Captains in the penultimate final in week 9 for Family Feud Champions. 

It has been great to see the collaborative and competitive spirit of our teams! The real winner has been the connections made between our staff and students.

Science Week

This week was Science Week, and students got to participate in a range of fun activities across the week. 

One of those activities that students could participate in was a lunchtime practical investigation exploring the question, “Do seeds respire?”.

Students tested both germinated and ungerminated beans at different temperatures using a carbon dioxide detector to measure respiration rates. The data collected was then analysed and used to create graphs with scientific graphing software, allowing students to identify patterns and compare the effects of temperature and germination on respiration.

This engaging activity provided students with a hands-on opportunity to apply scientific inquiry skills, collect and analyse data, and deepen their understanding of the life processes of plants.

Another exciting practical students got to participate in was crystal making.

Year 10 Formal

Staff and students recently enjoyed a fantastic evening at the Year 10 Formal. It was wonderful to see students dressed up and enjoying the opportunity to celebrate together.

The evening was filled with plenty of laughter, dancing, music and great memories, with students embracing the opportunity to celebrate together. The photo booth and DJ were a big hit with students dancing right until the very end of the night.

ONTTC Student of the Week

Congratulations to Lucas, in Year 12, on being awarded the ONTTC's Student of the Week. 

This award highlights the effort and commitment that Lucas has put in over multiple weeks. He has consistently followed ONTTC’s values of attending with a positive mindset towardsIntegrity, Growth and Excellence. They also display our underlying values of skill development, respect, teamwork, accountability, and safety. All these values contribute to our end goal of preparing your student with Employability skills, which will best prepare them for the workplace.

Congratulations again to Lucas on being recognised for ONTTC’s Student of the Week. ONTTC looks forward to continually working with you to develop the skills required to have a successful career in any pathway you choose.

Year 11 Chemistry

Our Year 11 Chemistry students put their practical skills to work using potassium permanganate to prepare and calculate dilutions with volumetric glassware. A great hands-on lesson combining precision, technique, and mathematical problem-solving in the lab!

Sports Report

Term 3 has already been a fantastic term for Hazel Glen College Sport, with a number of teams competing at NMR level and achieving some outstanding results.

Year 11/12 NMR Netball – Tuesday 4th August

Our Year 11/12 girls' netball team had an incredible run at NMR, finishing runners-up in the Grand Final. The team came agonisingly close to progressing to State, finishing just one win away from reaching the next level. A fantastic achievement and a great reflection of the effort and commitment of the team.

Year 9/10 Girls NMR Netball – Monday 17th August

Our Year 9/10 girls competed at NMR, representing Hazel Glen with plenty of enthusiasm, determination and team spirit. It was a great opportunity for the students to compete against some of the best school teams in the region.

Year 11/12 Boys Futsal – Monday 17th August

A huge congratulations to our Year 11/12 Boys Futsal team, who won the Grand Final at the gala day! The boys produced an outstanding performance throughout the day and finished on top when it mattered most. An excellent result for the team.

Year 8 Girls NMR Netball – Friday 21st August

Our Year 8 girls will take to the court at NMR this Friday. We wish the team all the best as they represent Hazel Glen and compete for the opportunity to progress further.

A huge congratulations to all of our students who have represented Hazel Glen College this term. The commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship displayed across all of our teams has been fantastic to see.

Student Shout Out – Milana

A huge congratulations to Milana, who recently represented Victoria at the SSV U12 Girls Football Championships in Canberra.

Milana and the Victorian team had an outstanding week, winning all of their games leading into the final before narrowly going down to South Australia by just 10 points. The team finished in an incredible 2nd place!

Milana played exceptionally well throughout the tournament and should be extremely proud of her achievement. What an incredible experience and a fantastic accomplishment - congratulations, Milana! 

Positive Climate

This term there has been a continued focus on creating a positive learning environment and encouraging positive behaviours amongst students. Each time a student is recognised for displaying one of our four values, they are awarded house points. 

So far this term, students have been recognised by staff for displaying positive values and behaviour on over 3000 occasions. We are extremely proud of the steps our Secondary Years students are taking to create a positive environment for learning for all.
