On Wednesday our Year 9-12 Theatre Studies students went to see Top Class Theatre Studies at the Melbourne Recital Centre where students listened to the chief assessor for Theatre Studies who guided them through key components of the course. Enthralled students were fortunate to see some inspiring top scoring monologue performances from last year’s graduating class and will use these to inspire their own work later this year.
Last December, 13 students and three staff members set off on the adventure of a lifetime travelling to New York and Los Angeles for 15 days of acting, performances, sightseeing and memories. In New York they saw 4 Broadway shows including Hamilton, The Lion King, Hadestown and The Outsiders. In Los Angeles they got to go to Warner Brothers and Universal Studios!
Amongst this were sombre moments spent at the 9/11 museum and memorial where students gained an understanding of the magnitude of the tragedy that marks New York City to this day. Acting workshops in New York and LA gave them a deeper understanding of Improvisation, Broadway rehearsal processes, movement and the Stella Adler acting technique. Below is a recount of the trip by Year 10 student George Rogers who is also playing the lead role of Jack Kelly in our upcoming production of Newsies.
The Tour of the US was such a brilliant opportunity for all members of the performing arts crew who got to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience. America is huge. There was nothing more inspiring than the atmosphere that you would feel in a Broadway show, the beaches of LA were beautiful and the thrill of being immersed in New York City was unlike anything you would every experience in Melbourne.
My personal favourite part of the trip, as I’ve recounted to all the people who’ve asked, was the day that we all randomly decided that we’d stop in central park and hop on the swing-set. It was just a little moment of comradery that made me feel so much closer to everyone who attended. The trip has secured many life-long bonds that I am so grateful to have made, and I would recommend it for any kid who finds joy in the arts.
Broadway, Beaches, Battlestar Galactica. All the tours and the workshops created memories that will last a lifetime and filled my camera roll in the best way possible. It was such a joy, to the point where reminiscing brings me that same sense of joy and gratefulness.
A reminder that Drama Club runs every Friday at lunch time in the Black Box Theatre of the Performing Arts Centre. Join students from all year levels as they engage in improvisation and acting challenges.
