ALUMNI NEWS

Julie Elkin

Ourschool Alumni Program Coordinator

Thursday, July 27th saw nine alumni return to North Geelong Secondary College to take part in a Careers session for the Year 10s, as part of their Careers Week.

I want to thank Yas Tiry (2002), Molly D’Elia (2022), Fiston Baraka (2018), Alphonse Mulashe (2016), Rob Straube (1979), Caterina Martino (2004), Emannuel Sumo (2011), Ahmad Sulaimi (2003) and Mustafa Niamatullah (2018) for giving up their time to tell their stories since leaving NGSC. Some of the messages they spoke of involved understanding that the way to your ‘happy’ career may not always be straightforward. At least two of the alumni had started three courses of study before finding what suited them best and made them happy to go to work each day. Others spoke of grasping opportunities and the importance of continuing to learn within their chosen field. One alumni said how important it was to start learning new skills as soon as possible, perhaps through the very rewarding act of volunteering in the community. The vast span of graduating years allowed students to see that life after school is a continuing journey, and that the choices they make now are not necessarily the defining act for their future.

I extend a grateful thank you to all alumni who attended.
