Year 3/4 Adventures at Thalgarrah

What an incredible time the Year 3 and 4 students had on their recent school camp to Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre! Full of laughter, learning, and a few late-night whispers, it was an experience everyone will cherish.

Day One: Thrills, Teamwork, and Edible Wonders!

Last Thursday morning, the atmosphere at school was buzzing! We were all eagerly waiting, ready to climb aboard the bus at 9:00 am sharp to begin our adventure.

Upon arrival at Thalgarrah, the students jumped straight into a fantastic series of activities designed to challenge and engage them. Day one was packed with:

  • Team Building Activities: Working together to solve tricky problems and strengthen bonds.
  • Orienteering: Navigating the grounds, developing map-reading skills, and exploring the surroundings.
  • Tribes and Territories: This strategy game was a big hit, proving to be a highly entertaining way to finish the afternoon!

The excitement continued with the evening meals. We were treated to a delicious and very creative afternoon tea: a 'potted plant'! Yes, you heard that right! It was a surprisingly delicious chocolate cake with mint. For dinner, we refuelled with a hearty and tasty lasagne.

As the day drew to a close, it was time for some relaxing board games and refreshing showers. While the majority of the students heard bed calling, others seized the opportunity to catch up and keep each other amused with plenty of late-night chatting!

Day Two: Wet Weather Wonders and Wonderful Wildlife!

Friday arrived with a little drizzle, but that certainly didn't dampen our spirits! The morning was dedicated to exploring the incredible world of local fauna. We were busy classifying various animals and even got the chance for some hands-on learning, getting to touch a range of animals and for the brave, even hold a snake!

The culinary creativity continued at morning tea, where we devoured an edible 'book and a pencil'—another delicious and highly imaginative snack!

In a stroke of luck, the rain stopped just in time for our final activity: a river excursion! We ventured down to the riverbank and were amazed by the tiny ecosystem beneath the surface, collecting a diverse range of bugs and even tadpoles. Matt, one of the Thalgarrah instructors, commented that it was the most diverse range he has ever seen there! What a treat!

A huge thank you must go to Mr Hyatt and Mrs Laurie for joining us on camp and making the two days such a safe, fun, and memorable experience for everyone.

Last Thursday ¾ piled onto the bus to Thalgarrag for our overnight camp. When we got there we soon found out that the day would be focused on teamwork. Fun filled games where we had to look behind us so we could win. Then Orienteering came upon us. “Find the flag! Use the map! In this hole!” we were all shouting.

At afternoon tea we found out that the cook gets creative. Edible pot plants! Tribes and Territories, faces covered in blue or red. “Get the token! We will win!” we shouted… Never a more competitive game!

… On Friday, we were in the Science Room and looked at animals, how they moved and then we went down to the river and had to fill our buckets up. We came back and tipped it in a tray and then we got cartons and made a little zoo. We filled them up with water and put different types of bugs in each tray and my group caught a yabby!

Squeak there go the brakes, Thalgarrah at last. We put clothes in our room then we went and had a tour. Our tour guide was Matt. We went and played and when we finished we put our stuff in our rooms. We played capture the flag and my group collected 17 out of 18 flags in 40 minutes. If we had 5 more minutes we would have collected every flag. After that we played Tribes and Territories. I was on the read team, we lost but it was still great fun.
