On Wednesday, 27 March, St Patrick's College travelled to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre at Albert Park for the ACC Swimming Championships.

In a first for St Pat's, we finished top spot in the U13, U15, U16, U17 and U18 age groups to win the Intermediate and Senior Cups and earn the title of overall winners for Division 2.

It was a fantastic day in the pool with senior boys Jack Lanyon, Tom Urquhart, Ed Meddings, Harry Robinson, breaking the Open Medley record 1:56.03 and Year 11 student Ed Meddings  achieving a recording-breaking swim in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 30.42 sec. Ed broke a 30-year-old record with his outstanding swim.

We are the first St Patrick's College sporting team to win at ACC and we now move up to Division 1 in 2025.

Thanks to Mark Stahl and Simon Dwyer for their assistance and support of the boys, and congratulations to our record-breaking swim team:

BAS Tennis

The BAS senior tennis season concluded last Friday, with SPC once again taking on Ballarat Grammar in the First IV competition (these two sides have contested the final for a number of consecutive years now).

Whilst we were victorious by a margin of 5 sets to 1, it was another close battle between the schools with some great tennis played. George Wills returned to the team after a tournament in Canberra earlier in the week and his inclusion certainly helped turn the match in our favour, winning his doubles and singles convincingly.

Ren Asai also played some brilliant tennis and was able to win his singles against a very determined opponent, with some high quality rallies displayed throughout the contest. An honourable mention must go to Riley Westlake, who has joined St Patrick’s this year as a boarder and played an important role throughout the season in both the Firsts and Seconds teams, always contributing in a positive manner to whichever team he was in.

Finally, a special thanks to our captain Hugo Johnston for his leadership and consistency. He has been a formidable force playing as the number two or three seed throughout the year and this was evident again on Friday, as the skipper won both his sets.

With this win, SPC were able to regain the title for the first time since 2020. A special thanks to all players who have contributed to the tennis program in 2024 – both in the first and seconds.

BAS Volleyball

On Wednesday, 20 March, our volleyball team were crowned BAS Volleyball Champions, continuing their extraodinary season on the court.

The team, consisting of Tyler Cowan (Captain), Tom Stute, Hayden Simpson, Tristan Earle, Levi Fordham, Guy Namtho and Sam Hansen, claimed the title from Ballarat Grammar in splendid fashion, winning 3-0.

The victory saw the boys go through the season undefeated and even more impressively, they did not drop a set in any of their matches. Well done, SPC!

Next term, the team will compete against some of the best schools in Victoria for the Volleyball Schools Cup. We wish them the best of luck!

BAS Senior Cricket

BGS 2/155 def SPC 6/37

Our boys were beaten soundly by a stronger Grammar side on Thursday, 21 March, knocking us out of the final.

We started off well with Ace bowling the two openers cheaply having BGS 2/19 off five overs.  Then the Grammar bats settled in using our hard running technique.  Connors made 49 before being bowled by Sharp. Cullenward 71 n.o. and Tanner 19 n.o. continued the onslaught despite good bowling and fielding.  Ace finished with figures of 2/11, Sharp 1/31, Goodson 0/19, Vanderwert 0/24, Davis 0/22 and Weidemann 0/33.

BGS 2 for 155 off 20 overs was always going to be a tough ask, especially with our star bat, Irvin away.

Steenhuis and Ace opened the batting, but struggled to get into rhythm as displayed previously.  The BGS side set up a field to block out our hit and run strategy.  The boys also had to be reasonably cautious so as to preserve their wickets to give us some sort of chance.  Ace was bowled for eight, then Steenhuis was caught for 14.  Steenhuis played some classy late cuts.  Wickets fell continuously after that as the boys did their best to bat out the innings: Vanderwert (1), Wiedemann (2), Goodson (0), Davis (0) and Eales 7 n.o.  SPC 6-37 off 20 overs.

Well done boys and I’ll see you next year.

Communication

The best form of communication we have with parent/guardians is via the Parent Access Module (PAM). Students require permission to participate in all sport. Parent/guardians will receive the information through a PAM activity permission. Please ensure that you read the information prior to giving permission and that you also talk to students about the information.

The daily messages are one of the best ways we can distribute information to students about sports that are on offer and where sign up meetings will be held. Students should check the daily messages regularly.

Once students have signed up for a sport, we will be adding them into a MS Teams group where they can communicate directly with their coach. Students must communicate with their coach if they are unavailable for a match so we can find a replacement to ensure we have a full team for each match.

If students are unsure of how to sign up for a sport or want more information, they can visit sports staff in the gymnasium.

SPC Sport Uniform

All sport uniforms can be purchased at the College Shop. Students need to ensure they are in the correct uniform to participate. The general sport uniform is the navy blue polo top, navy shorts and white socks. Certain sports will require very specific clothing. For example, the 1st XI cricketers require SPC Whites, SPC cricket shirt and SPC cricket cap. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Also, remember to wear sunscreen at all times.

I wish all students and coaches the best in 2024. Always play the game in the right spirit, wear the correct uniform and respect the facilities, home and away. St Patrick’s College is steeped in rich sporting tradition, and you are encouraged to add more chapters to our past endeavours.

I would like to thank all of the staff at St Patricks that support the Sport Program, it truly is amazing the amount of sporting opportunities that we provide for our students. This is a great school with an incredible history.

Please do not hesitate to contact me (jlappin@stpats.vic.edu.au) or our Sports Administrator Mr Simon Dwyer (sdwyer@stpats.vic.edu.au) at the College with any questions.
