Dear Echuca East Primary School,

My name is Mekaela Kraan and I am a Mal Whyte Rover Scout from Echuca. I am writing to warmly invite your organisation to take part in Echuca’s 4th ANZAC Eve Vigil in 2026.

This vigil, formally known as the “Holding Ground” Ceremony, is a night-long guard of honour held at Echuca’s historic War Memorial. From 6:00pm on ANZAC Eve through to 6:00am on ANZAC Morning, members of our community stand in quiet reflection around the Cenotaph. Just prior to dawn, the guards step down and the Dawn Service begins.

The vigil draws its meaning from the military tradition of “holding ground.” In service, reconnaissance patrols would locate and secure strategic ground ahead of the main force, often remaining alert throughout the night to ensure the area was protected. It required endurance, vigilance, courage and commitment.

Our Holding Ground Vigil symbolises those same qualities.

Through the silent hours of the night — when the town is asleep and the air grows still — someone will always be present, ensuring the memorial is never left unattended. It is a simple act, yet a powerful one. It represents respect for those who served, acknowledgement of sacrifice, and a shared commitment to remembrance.

We hope to see strong representation from local organisations and schools, as this vigil is especially meaningful for young people and community groups to actively demonstrate respect and service.

Instruction on how to “hold ground” will be provided on the night prior to each shift. Participants are only required to attend for their allocated time.

Please email echuca.vigil@outlook.com to make contact if you would like to participate.

I would also be very happy to meet with you and any interested participants to discuss the vigil further and share more about its significance.

Thank you for considering this invitation. I truly hope your group can stand with us as we hold the ground together through the night.

Lest We Forget.

Kind regards,

Mekaela Kraan
