World Teachers’ Day – Will Be Celebrated at MPS on Friday 23rd October

World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated nationally on Friday 30th October, however due to our Pupil Free Day we will be celebrating it at MPS on Friday 23rd October.

It’s a lovely opportunity to celebrate the incredible teachers we have at Mitcham Primary School!

As a parent myself, I know that sending your children off to school each day involves placing an enormous amount of trust in the people who spend their days with them. You trust that they’ll be looked after, that someone will notice if they’re having a tough day, that they’ll be encouraged when things get tricky and that they’ll be learning and growing. And I can honestly say that, at Mitcham, that trust is not misplaced.

Our teachers are amazing. They take the time to really get to know each child - their personalities, interests, strengths, worries and what makes them tick. They work incredibly hard to adapt lessons to meet different learning needs, find ways to keep students engaged and help every child make progress. They’re experts at all the important teaching stuff too: planning, explaining, questioning, assessing, giving feedback and constantly thinking about how to help their students improve.

But it’s often the little things that really show you what makes our teachers special.

Did you know? Our teachers regularly give up their own break times to connect with students doing activities such as playing basketball, UNO, chess, crafts, drawing, building connections and making sure children feel included. They check that children have eaten their lunch (and sometimes even make it for them if they haven't!), think carefully about individual students' needs when planning special events and activities, and follow up on worries or concerns. They notice when something isn't quite right, communicate with families and quietly do a hundred little things each day that help children feel safe, supported and cared for.

As parents, we don't always get to see these moments. We don't see every encouraging conversation, every extra bit of preparation or every time a teacher goes out of their way to help a child feel like they belong. But these things happen every single day, and they make such a difference.

So, on Friday 23rd October, we'd love families to encourage their children to show their teachers a little appreciation. A thoughtful note, a drawing, a handmade card or simply telling their teacher something they appreciate about them would be a wonderful way to say thanks. It doesn't need to be fancy – it's the thought that counts!

To our wonderful Mitcham teachers, thank you for everything you do, both the big things and the little things that often go unnoticed. As a parent, I'm incredibly grateful for the care, skill and heart you bring to your work. We are very lucky to have you!

Warmly,

Bron
