Volunteer Opportunity with CatholicCare and North Geelong Secondary College-North Geelong. 

Volunteer Tutors are needed to assist newly arrived refugee and migrant students at North Geelong Secondary College– (130 Separation Street, North Geelong) in Years 7 - 12 on Thursday lunchtime during the school term. 

The EAL Homework Club for Years 7 to 12 supports Secondary College students to integrate into their school environment, and develop their English language and study skills, while improving their social connectedness.  Students are from Refugee, and non-English speaking backgrounds, and tutors will assist the students to engage in group games, language learning, and homework activities. This provides a rewarding volunteer experience within the Refugee settlement and Education environments.

Time required:           Thursdays (12:40-1:30 pm). Once a week during the school term

Nominations are now open for young people aged 12-25 who live, work, learn or play in Greater Geelong for the 2024 Geelong Youth Awards.

The Geelong Youth Awards aim to recognise and celebrate young people and volunteers who have made or who are currently making significant contributions in the areas of leadership, innovation, cultural awareness, community work, sport, arts, music, and youth development.

The nine awards are;

  • Active Achievement Award recognises a young person whose involvement in sport and recreation has had a positive impact.
  • Arts & Music Award recognises a young person who has demonstrated hard work, creativity and passion in their art and engaged the community through various mediums including visual arts, music, writing, sculpture, theatre, or film.
  • Citizenship Award recognises individual young people that may be described as a champion due to their involvement and dedication to empower others.
  • Cultural Awareness Award recognises a young person who has contributed to creating a vibrant and diverse cultural community.
  • Innovation Award recognises and celebrates the efforts of a young person who strives to make change through innovative projects, inventions or initiatives that have made a significant impact.
  • Inspiration Award recognises a young person who can be described as an inspiration for others.
  • Leadership Award recognises a young person who has demonstrated leadership within their community through school, work or other pursuits/contributions and is regarded by others as a good role model.
  • Unsung Hero recognises a young person who can be described as having a positive attitude, a willingness to help and a commitment in doing so.
  • Volunteer Award -Working with young people recognises any person who works on a voluntary basis with young people. This award is open to all ages.

Second Hand Uniforms and Textbooks

The Second-Hand School Specialists shop in has moved to 4 Beauford Avenue, Bell Post Hill. It has been selling NGSC uniforms and textbooks for the last nine years. The shop is located approximately 5 minutes, by car, from NGSC.

They currently have approximately 500 pairs of trousers and 300 pairs of NGSC shorts in stock; and around 800 shirts. Being close to our school, they receive NGSC uniforms all the time. Families can leave a list of what they need, and they will text them as soon as the items are available. They sell on consignment at approximately half the cost of new prices, providing the item is in very good condition.
