Exciting News: Introducing SWPBS at Bundoora Primary
We are excited to share that Bundoora Primary School has been actively engaged in the school-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework since the beginning of this year. SWPBS is a highly sought-after, evidence-based initiative, and we are proud that our school was selected to take part through a competitive application process. Since then, we have made great progress by participating in professional learning and carrying out behind-the-scenes planning to ensure the framework is tailored to meet the unique needs of our school community.
Our Wellbeing Team, led by Julie, Kate, and Tiffany, have been guiding the development of SWPBS at our school, with additional support from our regional coach. Together, we are wanting to create a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment for all students.
What is SWPBS?
School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a research-backed framework that brings the school community together to foster a positive, safe, and supportive learning culture. It supports improvements in social, emotional, behavioural, and academic outcomes for students.
SWPBS focuses on introducing, modelling, and reinforcing positive social behaviours. Through explicit teaching of behavioural expectations and recognising students’ efforts via our Compass platform (positive feedback), SWPBS promotes a proactive approach to behaviour management.
By creating a supportive environment, SWPBS allows teachers and students to spend more time focusing on positive relationships and effective classroom instruction.
Benefits of SWPBS at Bundoora Primary:
Increased respectful and positive behaviours
More time dedicated to teaching and learning
Improved social and emotional wellbeing
Stronger, respectful relationships between students and staff
A safe, supported learning environment for all
Our Behaviour Expectation Matrix clearly defines the behaviours we expect from students across different school settings, making it easier for everyone to understand and practice positive behaviours consistently.
Next Steps
Next term, we will begin rolling out SWPBS to Year 3/4A, B and C. This means that some routines and experiences may look a little different for students in those year levels. Families with children across multiple year levels might notice these changes.
In term 4, we will be inviting all Year 3/4A, B and C families to a special forum to share more about SWPBS, answer questions, and gather your valuable feedback. We will also be collecting feedback from students and reviewing behaviour data to prepare for a school-wide launch in Term 1, 2026.
We recently held a student forum with the 3/4 students, where the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and students even contributed some fantastic ideas for future initiatives!
You will find attached the SWPBS Behaviour Expectation Matrix we will present to all students on the first day back next term. Please note, while our School Values remain unchanged, the SWPBS expectations
— Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe — will underpin all behavioural learning at Bundoora Primary.
As SWPBS is rolled out next term, families may also notice Compass notifications celebrating their child’s positive behaviours from the Matrix.
We look forward to keeping you updated on our progress and celebrating the positive changes happening at our school.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Warm regards,
The SWPBS Implementation Team Julie, Kate, and Tiffany
