Secondary 7/8
Term 1

Secondary 7/8
Term 1
We have had an engaging, fun, and educational start to Term 1. With 14 new students to the 7/8 section students have had fun getting to know each other through a variety of team-building games and activities, learning how to get along, support one another and cooperate as a section.
Each week, students explored Interoception through hands-on experiments designed to help students better understand their bodies and how they feel. Some of the favourite activities included holding an ice block, tasting different foods, observing carefully with eyes, placing hands in warm and cold water, blowing bubbles and rolling on the exercise ball. One activity students didn’t enjoy as much was the slimy, smelly hand cream!
A major highlight of the term was the Brain Dissection lesson. This was an exciting and memorable experience, where students explored sheep brains with curiosity and enthusiasm. While there were lots of different emotions at first, most students felt interested and happy to touch, cut and investigate. We followed this up with reading and writing activities, learning about the three main parts of the brain and their functions. Through these meaningful learning experiences, students are continuing to build and strengthen their individual mental health.
The excursion to the Watsonia shops was another fantastic experience. Students enjoyed the opportunity to independently spend their money at either the bakery or the op shop, building confidence and real-world skills.
Swimming was also a big part of our term. Many students loved swimming every day during our intensive week, while others preferred the routine of going once a week across the term. It was great to see the improvement all students made in their water safety and swimming skills. Added to this, four of our students went on to compete in the regional swimming carnival all winning gold medals.
In the classroom, students have been working hard in Sounds-Write, making great progress in their knowledge of sounds and reading skills. In Maths, we have been focusing on learning about time.
It has been a wonderful term full of learning, exploration and fun. Term 1 has been fun and we look forward to Term 2 where we begin our Spectacular practice and get to go on camp.
