Heads of Secondary Years' Report

Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Friends of Hazel Glen College,
As we move through the middle part of Term 2, there has been much happening across the Secondary Years and many opportunities for our students to connect, reflect and engage in learning beyond the classroom.
This week we acknowledge National Sorry Day and the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. These important occasions provide us with the opportunity to reflect on our shared history and consider how we can continue to work towards reconciliation, understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Throughout the week, students will engage in conversations and activities that encourage reflection, learning and connection as we continue to strengthen our commitment to reconciliation as a school community.
Earlier this month we also recognised IDAHOBIT Day. This day is an important opportunity to stand together against discrimination and celebrate inclusion, diversity and belonging for all members of our community. We are proud of the respectful and supportive culture we continue to build in the Secondary Years and thank our students and staff for the way they embraced the day and its message.
Last week, we celebrated Education Week across the College. Education Week provided an opportunity for us to reflect on the many things that make Hazel Glen College such a special place to learn and grow. Staff and students participated in conversations about what they value most about our College community and we enjoyed showcasing the many wonderful opportunities available to our students. It was fantastic to see students demonstrating pride in their learning, their classrooms and the wider College community.
There have also been a number of engaging learning experiences and excursions taking place across the Secondary Years. Our Year 9 students have continued their Experiential Program, including valuable work with The Big Issue, where students were encouraged to think critically about social issues, empathy and community connection. These experiences provide important opportunities for students to develop their understanding of the world around them while building confidence and collaboration skills.
Our VCE students have also been involved in a range of excursions and learning activities connected to their studies. These opportunities allow students to extend their classroom learning and deepen their understanding through real-world experiences and expert insights. We are particularly proud of our VCE Theatre Studies class for their evening performance of 'Clue', where many members of our community, including our local Mayor, were in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the students' performance.
As we look ahead to the second half of the term, there are many important events and opportunities approaching.
Information regarding upcoming exams for Year 10 and Year 11 students, including timetables and expectations, has been shared via Compass. We encourage families and students to regularly check Compass and begin planning and preparing for these assessments. Exams are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and continue building positive study habits and organisation skills.
On Monday, we will also come together as a Secondary Years community for a whole Secondary Years assembly focused on the theme of Reconciliation. Assemblies are always a valuable opportunity for us to gather, reflect and strengthen our sense of community, and we look forward to sharing this important occasion together.
Thank you to our students, staff and families for your continued support throughout another busy and rewarding term. A reminder to families of Year 9 students to add the 11th of June to their calendars for our Personal Best Showcase evening, and to our Year 12 community for the upcoming formal on June 12th.
A friendly reminder that Friday 5th of June is a College Curriculum Day, and there is no school running on this day for students. You can check out the 'Important Dates' section of the newsletter for other key dates to be aware of.
Warm regards,
