Lights, Camera, Action—A New School Year Begins!

Cody Gunn I Year 7 - 8 Acting Campus Principal

Wow—just like that, the first six weeks of secondary school have flown by! The new school year kicked off with great energy and excitement as we welcomed our Year 7 students and their families to Sandringham College. Starting secondary school is a major milestone, and it has been fantastic to see our newest students settling in, building friendships, and already becoming valued members of our vibrant school community.

Our Community, Our Goals

This year is particularly special as we mark the beginning of our dedicated Year 7 & 8 Campus. This new environment is designed to give students a strong foundation for their secondary education, fostering a sense of connection and confidence as they navigate new experiences.

Our Year 8 students, now the campus leaders, have embraced their role as mentors, guiding their younger peers and setting a positive example. Acting as big brothers and sisters, they have been instrumental in helping our Year 7s adjust, offering support, encouragement, and a friendly face along the way. Seeing the camaraderie developing between the two year levels has been fantastic, reinforcing the strong sense of belonging within our college.

Our Year 7s have had a busy start, embracing everything from locker allocations and school photos to assemblies and PAT testing—all within their first few weeks. They have shown enthusiasm and resilience, and we look forward to seeing them continue to grow, learn, and contribute to our college community in the years ahead.

Year 7 Camp

Last week, our Year 7 students set off for an unforgettable three-day adventure at Forest Edge Camp in Neerim South. More than just a camp, this experience is designed to help students step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, and form strong connections with their teachers and peers. It’s a fantastic way to start the year with teamwork, resilience, and plenty of fun!

Despite facing scorching 35-degree heat on day 1, the weather really turned it on, and our students enthusiastically embraced every challenge. They gave it their all, from high ropes and rafting to bushwalking and team-building activities, making memories that will last well beyond their first year of secondary school.

A highlight of camp, as always, was the Sandy Year 7 Camp Talent Show, where students and teachers took to the stage to compete for the prestigious title. This year’s winner was Viktoria, who wowed the audience with a stunning performance of a song in Russian—congratulations!

Our Year 8 and 9 Peer Support Leaders played a crucial role throughout camp, running engaging activities such as trivia and musical chairs on the first night. Their energy and enthusiasm helped create a fun, inclusive atmosphere—and did an excellent job tiring out the Year 7s just in time for bed!

A huge thank you to our dedicated staff who made this camp possible, especially Mia Cooper-Browne, Amy Porter and Michelle Lynch, whose countless hours of planning ensured a smooth and successful experience.
