SNACKS ON STICKS

This year we have students who have moved up from Lower juniors as well as new students to Naranga School who are learning new cooking routines and getting used to having two sessions of cooking.

This week we focused on our cutting skills. Students followed the demonstrations to make a bridge position with their fingers to steady the vegetables on their boards and carefully cut tomatoes in half, cucumbers lengthways and capsicums in strips and then diced. Students concentrated well and did this task carefully. Students also completed a colouring activity where they had to identify safety and hygiene issues as a group.

Ingredients

1 capsicum

1 cucumber

250g cherry tomatoes

250g tasty cheese cubes (Feta or Bocconcini)

Instructions

  1. Wash vegetables
  2. Slice cucumber lengthways in half then in quarters then dice into 1 cm pieces.
  3. Dice capsicum into small pieces.
  4. Slice cherry tomatoes in half.
  5. Carefully slide pieces onto a skewer. Alternate ingredients e.g. cucumber, capsicum, tomato, cheese then repeat the order again. Put onto a plate.

You can add your favourite vegetables, some ham and even pitted olives if you like.

What is growing well in our school garden?

The zucchinis that we planted in term four have surprised everyone by their size and weight. They really benefited from the rain and humid weather during the school holidays. We picked five zucchinis so far. The largest weighed over three kilograms, second largest over two kilograms and three over one and a half kilograms and the smallest one, eight hundred and sixty-eight grams. We will enjoy making zucchini slices, zucchini cakes and stuffed zucchini with mince and rice in Home Economics.
