Year 5/6 News at St Patrick’s with Mrs Flanagan

Welcome back everyone. The Year 5/6 students have returned from the holidays refreshed, settled and ready for learning. It has been wonderful to see students reconnecting with friends, re-establishing routines and showing enthusiasm as they begin the new school year with a positive and focused attitude.

Religion

In Religion, students have commenced the unit Discipleship, where they are learning what it means to live as Christians. Through exploring the Beatitudes, students are reflecting on values such as kindness, humility, justice and compassion, and how these teachings can guide their actions and choices in everyday life.

HSIE – Geography

Our Geography unit, A Diverse and Connected World, encourages students to explore countries of the Asia region and the many connections Australia has with other countries across the globe. Students are learning about the diversity of the world’s people, including Indigenous Peoples of other countries, and are reflecting on similarities, differences and the importance of intercultural understanding in an increasingly connected world.

English

In English, students have begun their spelling assessments and are engaging in a range of reading and writing activities. Our novel study, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, has already captured students’ interest. Through this text, students are developing comprehension skills, exploring themes and characters, and responding creatively through discussion and written tasks. Our library days are on Thursdays so don’t forget your bags!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students are learning about three-dimensional solids. They are developing skills to visualise, sketch and construct 3D objects, including prisms and pyramids, while making connections between three-dimensional objects and their two-dimensional representations.

PDHPE and Sport

In Health, students are studying Managing self and my relationships. They are learning how to establish and maintain positive relationships, practise conflict resolution strategies, and respond appropriately to challenging situations such as bullying. Games and activities promote teamwork, resilience and a strong sense of belonging.

In Sport, alongside the eagerly awaited Swimming Carnival, students are participating in invasion games. These lessons focus on developing attack and defence skills, object control, teamwork and decision-making, while applying strategies related to space, possession and evasion in both minor games and full game contexts.

Creative Arts

In Creative Arts, students are exploring ‘Evoking the Environment’, with a focus on the Australian landscape. They are investigating how artists observe, record and express their environment in meaningful ways. Students will also complete a nature-themed artwork for the Walcha Show, drawing inspiration from their surroundings.

Science

In Science with Mr Hyatt, students are learning about ‘The Material World.’ This unit explores how the properties of materials and the ways they are combined determine their uses and inform design solutions. Students are investigating how materials can be changed and manipulated for different purposes.

Homework:

We will begin homework (reading and times tables) in Week 4.

As the term continues, students will be encouraged to set personal learning goals, reflect on their progress and develop independence and responsibility for their learning. Building confidence, resilience and a love of learning remains a strong focus as we support students to grow academically, socially and emotionally throughout the year.
