Head of Junior School

Welcome back to the start of another exciting school year. A very warm welcome to all our new families joining us, especially our new Prep girls, and welcome back to those returning to the Junior School community. It has been wonderful to return and see everyone again and to meet so many new people as we begin the year together. The year has certainly started with genuine enthusiasm, from book drop off to the girls’ first morning back at school. It truly feels like it is going to be a great year. 

As I step into my second year in this role, I feel a stronger sense of connection to both the community and this iconic institution, St Catherine’s School. Gaining a deeper understanding of the culture and context has been so important in helping to lead Barbreck into the future, as we continue to improve and enhance the programs we offer. It is also a joy to be in an environment where I recognise so many familiar faces. 

One of our key focuses this year is continuing to improve the way we communicate with parents. We know how important it is for families to feel informed and connected to what is happening in the classroom. To support this, we will be introducing fortnightly updates outlining what students are learning, along with more opportunities for parents to engage through Open Mornings, the first of which will be held on 20 March. We will also be introducing student portfolios this term and making some changes to school reports at the end of Semesters 1 and 2. These changes are designed to provide clearer, more meaningful insight into your daughter’s learning. Our aim is to be transparent in what we do and why we do it, ensuring parents feel confident and well informed about their child’s experiences at school. 

It has been a joy to see the girls return with such positivity and enthusiasm. I am incredibly excited about the year ahead and all that we will achieve together as a Junior School community.
