On Monday, 29th April, our Year 10 cohort participated in the G10 Summit, a day full of different activities designed to support the students in thinking about their future pathways, wellbeing, and contribution to our community.
The day started with Deb Hanlen and Abbie Goddard from our careers team, who spoke to all the students about VCE and VCE-VM, starting the process for each student to decide on their pathway through the final two years of school. From there, students broke off into classes to further explore their options and complete a mock subject selection process, preparing them for the real thing in July.
After recess, students returned to their classrooms, where they worked with the team from Toolbox Education on a session entitled "Inner Critic”. The Year 10s have now participated in a Toolbox Education session for each of the last four years, as we aim to empower our young people with tools and strategies to deal with challenges at school and in life more generally.
Once the sessions had finished, students headed out for a barbecue lunch. I would like to thank the Year 12 VCE-VM students for their amazing work in cooking and serving sausages to so many students and staff! The music was playing, the sun was shining, and there was a fantastic atmosphere amongst the cohort.
When lunch ended, everyone was returned to the theatre to hear from former AFL star, commentator, author, and charity founder Eddie Betts, who shared his incredible story of growing up with 32 people in one house in Kalgoorlie to playing 350 AFL games for Carlton and Adelaide. Alongside his sporting achievements, Eddie shared the hardships he has endured—not only to make it to the AFL, but also the racism and discrimination he continues to face to this day, and how he has committed his life to educating young people on these issues. It was a truly powerful message, and it was wonderful to see our students so engaged in the presentation. A huge thank you to the Year 10 team of Jack Rolfe and Scout Greenhalgh for all their work in preparing and running a fantastic day for our Year 10 students.
Following the G10 Summit, on Friday, 2nd May, the Year 10 students were once again together, this time heading into the VCE and Careers Expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Along with students from schools all over Victoria, this was an exciting opportunity for students to speak with a wide range universities, TAFEs, academies, employers, and more.
It was wonderful to see so many students actively engaging in the expo and learning about their future pathway options. I congratulate all of the Year 10 students for the exceptional way they conducted themselves and represented our college. I also want to thank the careers team and all the staff who went along to support our students.
