Nation Wide News:

$25 million in super recovered or Indigenous clients, a program by First Nations Foundation (FNF) helped reconnect Indigenous Australians with $1.2 million in super in 2023. FNF CEO Phil Usher said millions are disconnected from Indigenous communities and outreach programs are needed. FNF assisted 2,160 people last year and expanded its reach through initiatives like Financial Wellness Week.

 

Aboriginal Legal Services peak body warns punitive approach to youth will worsen the situation. The National Body for Aboriginal Legal Services (NATSILS) criticized state and territory governments' responses to violence. NATSILS chair Karly Warner said governments are repeating failed policies and ignoring evidence-based solutions. NATSILS called for an end to punitive measures and a return to Closing the Gap commitments.

 

Cultural burn shares knowledge and protects the country, a cultural burn protects endangered frogs in Kosciuszko National Park: A cultural burn on Wolgalu Country in Kosciuszko National Park helped protect the southern corroboree frog, an endangered species. The burn, conducted by the Brungle Tumut Local Aboriginal Land Council and Duduroa Elders in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, used traditional techniques to improve Country's health and reduce fire risk around the frog enclosures.

Sports News:

Mediation commences between Indigenous former Hawks and  Hawthorn staff. Hawthorn FC faces racism claims from former Indigenous players. The players say they were mistreated during their time at the club. The players met with former coaches Clarkson and Fagan at the Human Rights Commission to try to reach an agreement. The players want apologies and compensation. The coaches deny wrongdoing, but a resolution could be reached soon.
