Discovery - Olden Day Games

To celebrate our Times Have Changed Discover Unit, we had an Olden Day Games afternoon. Children were placed into seven groups where they played games involving peer co-operation, hand-eye co-ordination and NO TECHNOLOGY. The children had a wonderful time! The games played were:

  • Skipping rope
  • Pick up sticks
  • Hula hoops
  • Hopscotch
  • Quoits
  • Jacks
  • Four Square

A big thank you to Mr. Kret who helped set up our activities.

Fire Rescue Incursion

Wow the Preps and Ones have had not one, but two visits from Fire Rescue Victoria (Bundoora). They learned the attributes of a safe fire and an unsafe fire, discussed the necessities of having a safe meet-up area in the event of a fire emergency at home, why fire alarms are so important (and so loud) and how to use a fire hose … yes, how to use a fire hose!!! A special thanks to Jason from Fire Rescue Victoria who co-ordinated with the Prep/One team to make this such a special event for the children.

Bundoora Park Farm Excursion

On a beautiful sunny day, Prep and Ones enjoyed an excursion to the Bundoora Park Farm. They learned about the historic site which has buildings over 100 years old! We rotated through four activities where children saw first-hand how life was lived when their Great-Grandparents were young.

Students learned how printing was achieved using stamps and ink and what a classroom looked and felt like. Children were given an ink and quill to write the alphabet. They found the classroom very ‘strict’ and the ink very messy! We took a tour of the farm where the children saw some curious emus, little ducklings with Mum and Dad and some very laid-back kangaroos. The kangaroos were by far the main attraction for the children!

There were ‘olden day’ games of quoits, bowling and boot tossing! Then children took a tour of a house where they were asked to find the ’washing machine’, ‘heater’ and ‘toilet’. Although it was hard work, the children loved having a go at washing the clothes in the ringer and ‘making’ butter.

After a wonderful day at the Bundoora Park Farm, we took the bus back to school and reflected on the day’s activities.

Thank you to our parent helpers Natalie, Lia, Megan and Carey. We could not have achieved such a fun and education-rich day without you.
