Reflection

This Saturday, May 31st, the Church will observe the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This significant Marian feast commemorates the Gospel account of Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth, as recorded in Luke 1:39-56.

After the Annunciation, Mary, carrying Jesus in her womb, traveled to the hill country to assist her elderly cousin, Elizabeth, who was also pregnant with John the Baptist. Upon Mary's greeting, the infant John leaped in Elizabeth's womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaimed Mary's blessedness with the words, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!" In response, Mary uttered her beautiful prayer of praise, the Magnificat.

The Feast of the Visitation highlights important themes of humility, service, and the joyous encounter between two women of faith. It underscores Mary's willingness to serve and her role in bringing Christ's presence to others, even before his birth. This celebration serves as a reminder of God's presence in our lives and the call to serve those in need.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

On this vigil of the Feast of the Visitation, we recall with joy and gratitude the journey of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth.

We give thanks for Mary's humility and her generous spirit of service, as she brought your Son, Jesus, to Elizabeth and John. Inspire us, Lord, to carry Christ's presence into the lives of others, just as Mary did.

May our hearts, like Elizabeth's, be open to recognise your blessings, and may our lives, like Mary's, sing your praises. Strengthen us to reach out in charity and support to those around us, sharing your love and joy.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
