Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL)

This Term we have kicked off our Positive Behaviours for Learning journey and it has been a roar-ing success. 

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) is a framework which focuses on consistent, school-wide values and expectations for all students. Its purpose is to create a positive school climate and improve student engagement. For our school, the values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience are the building blocks of our PBL framework. 

PBL is an evidence-based approach used in many schools across Australia and internationally. It supports schools to:

- Clearly define and explicitly teach positive behaviours

- Create consistent expectations across all classrooms and playground areas

- Recognise and celebrate positive behaviour

- Support students to make safe and respectful choices

Expected Behaviours Matrix

Our expected behaviours matrix clearly sets out expectations for all students at our school. These expectations fall under the values of either Respect, Responsibility or Resilience. They are then organised by where they are to demonstrate these expectations. Our students are required to follow these expectations no matter which class they are and which teacher or staff member they are working and learning with. This allows for consistency across the school to mitigate areas of confusion between classes and year levels.

Teaching the Expected Behaviours

Each week students learn about one of the expected behaviours from our matrix. Every Monday in every classroom teachers teach and allow students to practise the focus of the week. Then each day throughout the week students are reminded of the expectation through a ‘Daily Review’ to further develop and demonstrate their understanding of the expectation. 

The expectations that have been taught so far are:

- ‘I line up on time’

- ‘I wait to enter the oval routine’ which is part of the expectation ‘I move quietly and safely around the school’

- ‘I follow instructions from all staff’

In the remainder of the term students will be learning about:

- ‘I move quietly and safely around the school’ - particularly how we move around inside the school buildings.

- ‘I attempt to solve problems and seek solutions’

- ‘I wear my school uniform correctly and with pride’

- ‘I patiently wait my turn to speak’

Student Recognition & Acknowledgement

So far our students have done an amazing job of following the expectations and routines that have been set out for them. Therefore, it is important that they are acknowledged for their efforts in order to reinforce these behaviours to encourage students to continue doing the right thing. 

When students are witnessed to be following one of the expectations that have been taught, they can receive a token from any staff member. These tokens then go in their class jar. Each week 1 token is randomly chosen from the jar to receive a certificate of recognition. 

But don’t fret, even if a student doesn’t receive a certificate, their efforts are then used to contribute to our Whole School Reward system. Student tokens are then placed in our PBL rewards tub which can be found outside the library. Each time that the tub gets filled the school is acknowledged with a reward. After we collect ideas and  feedback from our Student Representative Council (SRC), we will then share with students what they will be working towards. 

A big congratulations to all of the students who have received a certificate for the expectations ‘I line up on time’ and ‘I wait to enter the oval’.
