Term 2 in Grade 4

Dear Grade 4 Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to another exciting term! We hope your break was filled with rest and rejuvenation. As we dive into Term 2, we are thrilled to continue our journey of learning and growth with your child.

Literacy Blocks

In Language Comprehension, our focus for this term revolves around the captivating novel, Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. This literary adventure will drive our Literacy Blocks, guiding students through an exploration of new vocabulary, deepening background knowledge, and applying comprehension strategies to gain a deeper understanding of the text.

As part of our writing curriculum, students will harness the knowledge gained from our novel studies to craft persuasive texts. Through the structured approach of The Writing Revolution, they will sharpen their skills in identifying and constructing various sentence types. Additionally, students will delve into gaining an understanding of adverbial phrases, utilising them to enhance and elaborate upon their writing, expanding basic sentences into vivid narratives.

In Spelling sessions, our focus will be on mastering long vowel sounds and the homophones that contain them. The Daily Review sessions will provide regular opportunities for students to revisit and reinforce these concepts, fostering deeper understanding and retention.

Maths

In Numeracy, students will continue their familiar routine of Daily Review to build fluency and solidify various mathematical concepts in their long-term memory. They will extend their knowledge of Place Value to decimal numbers up to hundredths and apply their knowledge of fractions to count by common unit fractions, locating them on number lines and linking familiar fractions to decimal numbers. Students will strengthen their grasp of the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – and continue developing a range of mental math strategies. In Measurement, they will explore various concepts like length, mass, capacity, time, and angles, and learn strategies to measure the perimeter of regular shapes. Finally, in Statistics, students will delve into data displays like pictographs and column graphs.

Units of Work

In Term Two, the focus will be on Geography and Biological Science. Throughout this unit, students will enhance their understanding of Asia, Africa, and South America. They will learn about climate and weather patterns, biomes, flora and fauna, human and natural features, as well as the lifestyles of inhabitants in these regions. They will explore a variety of countries before embarking on a collaborative project, enabling them to delve deeper into a country from one of the selected continents.
