This year, we trialled a new literacy program with our Year 7 students. Accelerated Reader is a system which helps us measure reading proficiency and match pupils with suitable books. Once a student finishes a novel, they complete a quiz which tests their comprehension. Over time, Accelerated Reader gathers data which we can use to improve literacy outcomes.
To augment this strategy, we held a competition to see which readers in each Year 7 class could accumulate the highest word count. Students have to pass their reading quizzes to add to their word count totals, so the aim is to reward diligent reading!
In total, the Year 7s read 2,493,397 words. If you consider this figure is based only successful quizzes, the actual number of words read by this diligent group would be much higher!
The winners and second placed students in each Year 7 class received JB-HiFi vouchers. Well done to, Beau JOHNS, Jack WARDA, Raneen BUTRUS, Tereza TOMA, Alyssa CURCIO, Jainam JAIN, Mia INTURRISI, Evie LEUTA, Lucinda DAWOOD, Kerim ABDUL-WAHAB, Mustafa Danish QURESHI, Nikola EDWARDS, Jai SINGH and Hashem ZAID.
