Mathematics Curriculum Version 2.0

In Semester One this year, Carlton Gardens Primary School began teaching the revised Mathematics Curriculum Version 2.0, developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

The new curriculum is different from the old one. While the previous version focused on three main areas—Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability—the updated curriculum includes the following strands:

• Number
• Algebra
• Space
• Geometry
• Statistics
• Probability (from Grade 3 onwards)

Because the content and achievement levels have changed, the new curriculum cannot be directly compared to the old one. All of our teachers have updated their planning and teaching to reflect the new curriculum, ensuring it meets the needs of their students.

From Semester 1, 2025, we will also begin reporting your child’s progress using the new curriculum. Instead of receiving separate scores for the three previous areas, you’ll see one overall achievement score for Mathematics.

The revised Mathematics curriculum supports evidence-based teaching practices, in line with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0). A strong start in mathematics is key to building confidence, and all children are capable of learning and succeeding in this subject.

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting children’s learning. You can help build your child’s numeracy skills by doing everyday activities together, such as cooking, planning trips, or keeping score in games. This kind of learning is especially important for helping students feel confident—particularly girls and students with disabilities, who may feel more anxious about maths.
