Daily Review Maths News

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to share an update on our ongoing commitment in fostering strong mathematical skills for our students. Since Semester 2 last year, we've implemented the Daily Review approach in Maths across all year levels. This initiative is based on proven research methods and aims to help students build fluency and automaticity in solving various mathematical problems.

What is Daily Review?

Daily Review consists of short, focused activities incorporated into each Maths lesson. These activities revisit previously learned concepts and skills, allowing students to practice and solidify their understanding by providing multiple exposure over time. A challenge level is available to students working beyond the expected level. Below are some typical daily review slides.

Maths Daily Review at Footscray West Primary School

At FWPS, we start each Maths lesson with the Daily Review which runs for 10 minutes. We review concepts that they have learnt in the classroom previously. The slides have inbuilt challenge questions for students who are ready for the next step in their learning.

The Science Behind Daily Review

Our Daily Review program is built on three key research principles:

1. Spaced practice:

Reviewing concepts over time with structured intervals in between learning periods strengthens memory and retrieval, compared to cramming information over a short period.

2. Interleaved practice:

Exposing students to a range of concepts and different types of problems helps them develop broader problem-solving abilities and enhances the retrieval of information.

3. Retrieval practice:

Actively recalling information, rather than simply re-reading it, promotes deeper understanding and strengthens neural connections.

Benefits of Daily Review

By incorporating these research-based practices into our Mathematics curriculum through the Daily Review, we aim to empower your child with strong mathematical skills and a deep understanding of core concepts.

We encourage you to discuss this initiative with your child and reach out to a member of the Maths Team if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

The FWPS Maths Team,

Carolyn, Dan, Medha and Monica
