Education, like anything else we work on together, is based in relationships. That’s the central message of Relationship based Education (RbE), a philosophy of education developed by John Hendry OAM and supported by Parents Victoria. I attended a half-day event for education stakeholders on 27 May, where John explained what RbE is and how it works in schools.
John says that learning is relational, that is we learn in the context of relationships. He explained the five elements of a quality relationship (Trust, Forgiveness, Integrity, Hope and Compassion) and drew on psychological research from various sources to emphasise the importance of quality relationships to good teaching and learning. John has worked extensively with schools all around Victoria (and interstate and internationally) to create a positive and resilient school culture based on the importance of quality relationships.
Here are some resources if you’d like to know more:
- The RbE section of the Parents Victoria website. You’ll find lots of information on the philosophy behind RbE, how it works in schools and suggestions for further reading. The section includes:
- A 2-page flyer that briefly summarises RbE.
- A detailed case study of how RbE worked at Ocean Grove Primary School, including details of the program, outcomes and feedback from senior staff.
- A booklet of articles about the philosophy of RbE and its application in schools.
- Here is a link to some testimonials from participant schools
