As Christmas season ramps up and the crazy, chaotic Christmas rush begins, here's a gentle reminder to consider popping a book under the tree for your young person.
Among all the noise and excitement, a good book offers something rare: calm, imagination, and genuine connection. I've spoken many times about the benefits of reading, and I'll continue to advocate the power of setting aside at least 20 minutes each day to dive into a story. It's a small habit that can make a big difference - building focus, strengthening literacy, and giving young people a quiet space to breathe.
With the upcoming social media delay, many students may be feeling added stress or frustration. Encouraging a transition to reading can offer a healthy, grounding alternative - something that supports wellbeing rather than draining it.
To make things easier, I've attached a list of books to consider - titles that have been particularly popular with students at Sandringham College this year. I would also recommend listening to an informative podcast called Your Kid's Next Read. It might just spark the perfect gift idea!
This year, the library is taking part in an exciting international Bookmark Exchange!
We’ve been matched with a partner school in Slovenia. During lunchtime sessions, our students have been busy designing and creating unique bookmarks to send to their new overseas friends.
Once our bookmarks are posted, the Slovenian students will do the same in return. Soon, our students will receive a bundle of beautifully crafted bookmarks from Slovenia—an inspiring way to celebrate reading, creativity, and global connection.

There was an amazing response to the annual Halloween Short Story Writing Competition, with students from most year levels entering. I enjoyed reading the stories. Wow, the imagination of some students. After reading about so many ghosts, witches and demons, I found myself looking around corners on Halloween night. This year, first place went to two students...
All place getters will win The Story Writers Handbook by Katrina Nannestad and an
ice-cream voucher from Augustus.

Students can access the Sandringham College Library Website 24/7.
