Supporting your child through the big leap into Year 7
As your young person prepares for that important step from primary school into secondary school, the transition can bring both excitement and questions - for both families and children alike.
That’s why we’re pleased to invite you to our upcoming Parent Information Night: Supporting students entering into Year 7, hosted by Kingston Youth Services in partnership with clinical psychologist Dr Amanda Mullin.
What the session involves
This free online information session will run on Tuesday 2 December 2025, from 7 - 8pm.
Parents and caregivers will hear from Dr Mullin, a clinical psychologist who specialises in child and adolescent wellbeing.
Throughout the evening, Dr Mullin will walk parents through what to expect as children transition into Year 7, offering practical advice, simple strategies and supportive insights to help families feel prepared and confident.
Why it’s worth attending
Moving into secondary school is not just a change of building or timetable - it can mean new social circles, more subjects, different expectations and increased independence.
For parents, it can feel like both a milestone and a mystery.
Dr Mullin brings a grounded, insightful and warm approach - making sense of how we can best support our young people’s mental health, neurodiversity and resilience as they step into this next phase.
By joining, you’ll be better equipped to:
- Recognise the social and emotional transitions your child may face.
- Support their wellbeing in tangible ways (at home, in conversation, through routines).
- Advocate for their needs and help them feel confident entering Year 7.
- Connect with other parents and share the journey of preparing together.
How to register
The session is free however bookings are essential. You can secure your place online via the event booking link.
We recommend registering early so you receive any pre-event information and have time to note any questions you’d like covered.
As part of our commitment under the City of Kingston Youth Strategy to support young people, we believe in empowering families too - because a well-informed parent network equals stronger support for our 12-to-25-year-olds.This event is a perfect opportunity for you to connect, prepare and feel confident in this transition period.
We look forward to having you join us for what promises to be a valuable and affirming evening.

As it is coming close to Christmas and children wanting e-bikes and e-scooters for presents, we would like to remind the parents of the dangers and risks that are associated with them and to seriously consider the safety risks that are involved with these machines. Also note, there is also evidence of fires occurring from the lithium batteries which has resulted in fatal house fires.
