Chev Need to Knows

Dear Parents and Carers,
Social Media Laws
Commencing 10 December, young people under the age of 16 will be banned from using social media. In a world-first move, Australia will be the first country to take such a stance in banning children from some of the world's most prominent social media platforms.
A few weeks ago, the government and eSafety commissioner released a list of platforms covered by the rules, which will forbid anyone under 16 from having an account. These include:
Snapchat
TikTok
YouTube
X
Threads (Meta's version of X)
Kick (an online personal streaming service)
Information about the upcoming social media age restrictions has now been finalised, and the latest updates can be found on the eSafety website at the following pages:
eSafety is also offering free online parent/carer information sessions, with many different available times to suit our busy schedules, and you can register for these webinars here: Social media age restrictions explained – a guide for parents and carers.
Furthermore, eSafety has developed information and resources to support young people, as well as parents and carers, to understand the social media age restrictions, via these links:
Another organisation, the Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT, asked Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, author, broadcaster and one of Australia's leading psychologists, to help educators, parents, and carers prepare for the upcoming changes to social media platforms. In a clear and informative 30-minute video, linked below, Dr Carr-Gregg explains what social media is, how the age restrictions will work, why it's happening and how it will affect families and schools.
I invite all parents and carers to take time out in their busy day for half an hour to watch this video, so that they understand and are equipped to handle the impact of the changes on their families.
You are invited to view 'The Social Media Delay: What It Means for Parents and Schools'
As the nation embraces world-first new laws regarding teenage social media, we will continue to navigate this in a way that supports our students, your children, to understand what is before them.
Best wishes for the weekend,
Greg Miller
Principal

We are happy to advise that Music will be running as a Year 9 elective in 2026. Students have been advised; if your child has any questions, please ask them to see Mrs Graham or Mrs Bentley.
On Monday, 17 November, Year 7 will take part in an exciting Science Immersion Day. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a Taronga Zoo workshop, a bridge-building activity, and a chemistry presentation and experiment.
The day will be held on the Chevalier College grounds under the supervision of the Science staff. Students do not need to bring books or laptops and are encouraged to leave these at home. There will be breaks throughout the day; however, these will not align with regular school lunch times. Please ensure students bring their own food, as the canteen will be closed. Students are to wear their normal summer uniform for the day.
Students are to attend Homeroom as normal in the morning for roll marking before proceeding to the Science Lawn (outside F8). They will be dismissed at the usual time at the end of the day.
We look forward to a fun and engaging day filled with hands-on learning and new experiences.

Leader of Learning - Science

All Year 10 will be required to attend school on Monday 24 November to participate in an important Wellbeing program, called Love Bites.
Love Bites is a respectful relationships program that has been developed by NAPCAN based on best practice standards for education programs and has been formally endorsed by the NSW Department of Education. It consists of interactive workshops delivered over a 1-day session that provides young people with a safe environment to examine, discuss and explore respectful relationships. The program will be presented by trained external professionals.
Preparing young people for social media age restrictions.
In this webinar, internet safety expert Brett Lee will provide an overview of the social media age restriction changes coming into effect next month, explore how these changes are likely to affect young people, and outline steps those who support them can take to assist them and their families to prepare, and offer practical strategies and tips for navigating the transition and beyond.

Homerooms have been allocated two individuals to put a Christmas parcel together for. Your child may be asked to bring in some money or an item to contribute. I’d encourage you to take your child with you to purchase any requested items. These moments are great opportunities to discuss with your child the importance of compassion towards the marginalised.
We also welcome any families who may wish to put together a package as a family. If you would like to do this, please contact the office and an individual’s name and an item list can be sent home with your child. We ask that all parcels are delivered to the school by Friday 5 December.
This year we are collectively putting together 120 parcels for local community members. Thank you in advance for contributing to this practical expression of Spirituality of the Heart.
Chevalier College is once again supporting the Community Christmas Dinner which provides a Christmas lunch for local community member who are either going to be alone at Christmas or are struggling financially to celebrate the season. With the increased cost of living, last year’s event saw 300 people attend. The college has been asked to contribute by providing Christmas Trees. If you have a Christmas tree or tree decorations which could be donated to the event, please drop them into the college by Friday 5 December. Any support is appreciated.
9.05am Friday 5 December - All Welcome.
