Year 6 Curriculum News 

Term 3, 2025 

We have started the term continuing preparations for our Mega Market. Excitement is building as the students create advertising jingles and posters for their stalls. We look forward to sharing our market with the whole school on the 12 August.

Sharing the Planet 

Central Idea

Exploration of interests and passions inspires learning and innovation 

The Year Six students will begin their PYP Exhibition unit later this term. This will mark the culmination of their Primary Years Programme journey. This unit will provide students with the opportunity to explore a real-world issue they are passionate about, inquire deeply into its causes and impacts, and consider innovative solutions. 

Throughout the unit, students will

• Identify a global issue of personal interest. 

• Develop lines of inquiry and pose meaningful questions. 

• Investigate the social and environmental impacts of their chosen issue. 

• Explore existing initiatives and responses to the problem. 

Using the design process, students will plan and take action in a variety of ways to raise awareness or contribute to solving their issue. 

As a year level, we will co-construct goals for the Exhibition to guide students in designing their communication materials and Exhibition displays. 

Throughout the process, students will be encouraged to manage their time effectively, reflect on their collaboration, evaluate their ideas and communication strategies, and make thoughtful improvements along the way. 

Literacy 

Reading 

Students will continue to review reading comprehension strategies. They will focus on Making Predictions, Finding Word Meaning in Context, Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences, distinguishing between Fact and Opinion, Identifying Author’s Purpose, Interpreting Figurative Language and Summarising.  

Spelling 

We continue to incorporate SMART Spelling words into our Spelling lists, as well as unit of inquiry specific vocabulary. 

Numeracy 

Number 

In Maths, students will revise and expand their knowledge of the relationship between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. 

Algebra 

Students will explore the use of brackets and order of operations to write number sentences as well as developing their understanding of Algebra. 

Measurement 

Students will develop their understanding of the following concepts throughout the term: 

• Cartesian Coordinates 

• Measure, calculate and compare elapsed time 

• Interpret and use timetables 

• Converting between common metric units 

Space 

The students will be looking at cross sections of prisms, Cartesian plane and geometric patterns. 

Statistics 

Students will plan and conduct statistical investigations by posing and refining questions.  

Probability 

In Probability, students will apply their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages to describe probabilities. They will develop their knowledge of the vocabulary used in probability and conduct chance experiments using appropriate digital technologies. 

Inclusive Approaches 

Throughout Term 3, students will be continuing The CyberSafety Project lessons to support the students develop future skills, lifelong habits and self-regulation when using digital technologies. The Cybersafety Project aims to create safer communities through proactive teaching strategies to support students to learn how to participate safely and responsibly ​in a digital world.  

Rights, Resilience & Respectful Relationships 

As part of our Wellbeing Program in Year 6 we will continue with the government mandated Resilience Rights & Respectful Relationships lessons in Week 1, Term 3. We will focus on Topic 2 and 3 this term.
