Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

In Semester Two, students in Year Prep, One and Two will have a weekly session focussed on Social Emotional Learning as a part of their specialist program. The program will draw on the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resources and the Personal and Social Capabilities from the Victorian Curriculum.

Prep: Stress Management and Help-Seeking

In the Stress Management unit, students will develop an age appropriate definition of the term stress. They will discuss the early signs of stress and practice simple calming strategies such as deep breathing, positive self‑talk and other coping techniques. In Help‑Seeking, students will explore when and how to ask for help, identify trusted adults or peers, and role‑play scenarios offering support to others. The curriculum will be delivered through age‑appropriate stories, games, role-play and guided activities.

Year One and Two: Stress Management and Help-Seeking

In Years One and Two this term, students will co‑construct an age‑appropriate definition of stress (e.g. feeling tense or upset when things feel too hard). They will explore how stress is felt in the body and what situations can cause it, whilst also developing an awareness that stress is different for everyone and what upsets one person may not affect another. They will work together to identify calming down and cheering up strategies (eg. breathing, drawing, listening to music) and practice choosing what helps them as an individual. In the Help‑Giving unit,  students will role‑play simple peer‑helping scenarios and help‑seeking by naming trusted people and imagining asking for help. Topics will be delivered through games, stories and role-play activities.
