Reading and Viewing

We will continue with the Little Learners Love Literacy program this term. The Year Ones have become confident with our Little Learners Literacy block routine and we look forward to welcoming parent helpers in week 4. We will be learning about new phonemes and graphemes as well as continuing to revise one we have learnt previously. The student will apply this knowledge when working at their small group task. As well as LLLL, we will continue building our reading and viewing skills by reading a variety of picture story books and completing book responses to demonstrate our comprehension.

We will also continue to use Heggerty daily to increase and revise our phonemic awareness, including syllables and rhyming.

Writing

Our focus this term is informative and persuasive texts. We will be using the picture books Iggy Peck, Architect (informative), The Most Magnificent Thing, (informative), I Want my Hat Back (Persuasive) and The Day the Crayons Quit (Persuasive).

We will continue our work on handwriting with a strong focus on correct letter formation. Our spelling overview will be devised from the Little Learners Love Literacy program.

Speaking and Listening

As well as opportunities for rich dialogue during whole class and small group discussions, we will be continuing with the formal oral language program this term (the Take Home Toy and the Mystery Box). Both of these take home tasks began in Week Six of Term One. Just a reminder - the Take Home Toy will be sent with a scrapbook to document the adventures of the toy for the week, while the Mystery Box will be sent home empty for the students to fill with one item that is special to them and they will be required to write clues regarding this toy, to share with the class.

Mathematics

The Year Ones will continue to build on their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction from Term 1. They will learn to partition and solve problems using two digit numbers. We will also spend time learning about strategies to solve addition and subtraction. We will introduce measurement, and learn about length, mass and capacity. To end the term, they will focus on time, learning that events have a duration and can be sequenced over a length of time.

Religion

The children will explore the big ideas of God, Religion and Life alongside Morality and Justice in ways that are meaningful and engaging.

Students will come to understand that they are part of God’s family and that they are deeply loved and valued. Through Bible stories such as Creation, Jesus Welcomes the Children, The Good Samaritan, and The Lost Sheep, students will learn about God’s love, care and forgiveness, and how Jesus shows us how to live.

Science: Daily and Seasonal Changes

The children will look at the seasonal changes and how it affects plants. We will also look at how patterns influence the behaviour and appearance of living things, including hibernation and migration. The children will explore how First Nation people use seasonal indicators to manage their resources.

Humanities: Change

Our Humanities units will focus on change. The changes in our environment that are created naturally or by humans. As well as learning about how family life has changed over time.

Wellbeing

Our Wellbeing focus for Term Two will be Emotional Literacy and Problem Solving. This will include identifying and understanding our emotions and learning how to manage these when things don’t go our way or we are worried about something. As well as, recognising that there are many ways to solve conflict and identifying cooperative behaviours.
