Hospitality

Cafe

Every Wednesday at lunch-time our hospitality students run a fully operational cafe that gives them practical experience and an insight into all areas of hospitality, including food service and preparing food for large numbers of patrons.

The cafe supports our students to provide service to all types of customers (gluten free, vegetarian, etc.) The students are doing an excellent job and their food is being enjoyed by all.

From our staff......................

The students in the café have been very accommodating, they always make me a vegetarian version and allow me to take my lunch and dessert to go so I don’t miss out! So far I have tried the curry, which was fresh and delicious, the apple crumble and custard, which was very decadent and the berry tart- YUM! I’m looking forward to the soups on the menu for end of term. If you haven’t had lunch in the café yet, I highly recommend it. Great food and great service!

Wednesday lunch times staff look forward to being treated to a delicious 2 course lunch carefully prepared by the VET Hospitality students. Each time the quality of the food improves with catering to various dietary needs. Fresh ingredients with a balance of flavours and friendly, efficient service by the students are important industry skills which the students display regularly. They should all be very proud of themselves and the dishes they create.

“This Term, every Wednesday I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying delicious two-course vegetarian meals at the lunch-time café run by the VET Hospitality Staff and students. It’s great to see our young chefs at work are able to apply their knowledge in a real life scenario. The café catered for individual needs and students always served the food with lovely smiles on their faces.”

From the Students.............

Start of the year in VCE VET Hospitality, we’ve been learning about farinaceous dishes (rice, cous cous, polenta etc), eggs, appetisers and salads. Through theory and practical works we have been cooking and preparing ingredients for the café where we serve teachers with the food we’ve prepared through the skills we’ve learnt and developed in class. Throughout our weeks of doing café, 2 students get the opportunity to be team leader. This allows people to get a further insight of what working in a real industrial kitchen will be like. It also gives you important life skills such as team work, co-operation, problem solving, organization, time management skills and the ability to work under pressure. In our theory lessons, we develop further knowledge and understanding of concepts of nutritional value and season of fresh produce.
