Melbourne Museum Excursion

The Bunjilaka Aboriginal Culture Centre at Melbourne Museum aims to further partnerships with Aboriginal communities, promote reconciliation to all visitors and actively support Indigenous rights and perspectives through exhibitions, performances, and activities. As part of NAIDOC week observances and to provide a better understanding of the rights and perspectives of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, a group composed of year 9 EAL and Indigenous school students, visited the museum.

It was a great opportunity for Craigieburn Secondary College pupils to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Australia’s Indigenous community. At the Melbourne Museum, students participated in a self-guided program on “Indigenous Australia and the modern world”. Students were provided with a trail booklet that guided them through the exhibition and helped them learn how the cultural practices of the First Peoples shaped their identity and struggle for freedom.

In particular, the students spent time in the “Deep listening space” where they were able to hear the voices of First Nations Australians. This activity will inform their assessment task as the class will need to specifically analyse the effect of colonisation on Indigenous identity.
