Reporting - English

In line with recent K-2 English curriculum reform, changes have been made to the upcoming Semester One reports.

 

Previously, the English K-2 reports assessed key knowledge and skills in: Speaking and Listening; Writing and Representing; Reading and Viewing. 

 

The reformed syllabus contains new learning outcomes related to the knowledge, understanding and skills required in the focus areas of:

  • Oral Language and Communication
  • Vocabulary
  • Phonological Awareness (Kindergarten only)
  • Print Conventions (Kindergarten only)
  • Phonic Knowledge
  • Reading Fluency
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Creating Written Texts
  • Spelling
  • Handwriting
  • Understanding and Responding to Literature

Oral Language and Communication - content focuses on speaking and listening. Key areas include: listening for understanding; social and learning interactions; understanding and using grammar when interacting; and oral narrative (being able to tell/retell a story to peers or adults using oral language).

Vocabulary - content focuses on learning and using a wide range of words.

Phonological Awareness - content focuses on being able to identify words and the syllables within them, as well as being able to identify, blend and use phonemes (sounds).

Print Conventions - content focus on the features of printed texts and the directionality required to read and understand printed texts.

Phonic Knowledge - content focuses matching graphemes (letters) with phonemes (sounds) and using this knowledge when reading and writing. This includes single sounds such as 'd' and digraphs such as 'sh' (when two sounds come together to make one sound).

Reading Fluency - content focuses on being able to read text automatically and accurately, with rhythm and expression.

Reading Comprehension - content focuses on understanding different types of words, different types of texts and being able to make meaning from a text.

Creating Written Texts - content focuses on being able to create a text for a purpose with correct grammar and punctuation.

Spelling - content focuses on using knowledge, strategies and rules to spell common words.

Handwriting - content focuses on correct, legible formation of letters when creating texts.

Understanding and Responding to Literature - content focuses on making connections with a text, understanding a narrative and the roles characters can play through language and actions.
