MATILDA MADNESS

Last week our production of Matilda the Musical drew to a close. Over the last term and a half students, teachers, parents and volunteers have worked incredibly hard to create a collective piece of work that has high production values, highlights our students' exceptional skills, and fosters our strong performing arts community.

The last few weeks have been incredibly rewarding for us all. The theatre has felt like a hive of busy worker bees, with so many different people involved in constructing props, performing music, rehearsing scenes, checking costumes, refining choreography and perfecting those British accents! Special thanks to the costume team, headed up by the amazing Catherine Kirby, who spent their evenings and Sundays on sewing machines and frantically running repairs on costumes for us, and to the dedicated set construction team, led by Pete Hamilton and Jake Kirby, who worked late at night to get painting and essential construction completed in time.  Our technical team, under  the expert tutelage of Michael Eather, learnt so much during their time operating the audio and lighting desks, mic swaps, AV content management and more. The crew channeled their inner 'ninja' abilities by moving all set swiftly and confidently, navigating backstage and managing issues calmly.

Our makeup team were supported by alumni Imke Breayley and refined their work throughout the season to transform students into salsa dancers, school children, kids at a dress up party, Russians with extensive facial hair, and even managed to transform the charming Kyle McKinnon into the atrocious headmistress, Miss Trunchball.

The band made so much progress and are to be congratulated on such impressive musical performances. This was the first time in over a decade where we have played the entire score from start to finish including all underscoring and musical interludes - it's quite a feat that Musical Director Tim Clifton and his tribe of talented musicians pulled off.  Our vocalists were lucky to have such fantastic accompaniment.

And finally, our cast continually worked on every aspect of their performance until the very last show. They listened to feedback and incorporated it into their work; they helped one another during tiring and stressful moments and lived up to the college values throughout the entire period.

It's been truly astonishing to watch such a diverse array of people come together with a shared goal - that of putting on the very best production we could. Congratulations to the entire cast, crew, band and support team on their performance season.
