Teaching and Learning

At Sandringham College we are committed to continually striving to improving the learning and teaching. Our teachers continue to work each week in their  Professional Learning Team (PLT) to take a collaborative approach to planning, implementing and monitoring teaching interventions. Teams have honed their pedagogy by strategically focussing on evidence based High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS). We understand that to have the greatest impact, the HITS need to be used as a part on our ongoing improvement cycle. To this end, we have had Learning Walks across the college over the last 3 weeks to map how well these are integrated into our collective learning culture, where leaders have visited classrooms for short periods to collect broad data on HITS. Teachers have also been observing each other's classes to share pedagogy and seeking feedback from their students in PIVOT surveys.  All of these strategies ensure that we are focussed on the best possible learning for every student.

Technologies Update

This term in Digital Technology has seen Year 8 students explore the topic of algorithms and their applications. As part of their assessment for this topic, students have been collaboratively designing and developing their own game over an extended period of time, which features one or more algorithms that are clearly defined. They have followed a logical and orderly process which required them to: brainstorm and challenge ideas, develop their game using a chosen platform, test and improve their game, and evaluate the success of their efforts.

I have been impressed with the level of dedication, creativity and problem solving demonstrated by the students. A number of groups have gone above and beyond to design and develop a high quality product, voluntarily working on this outside of class and joining me at lunchtime to work on them.

The introduction of Minecraft: Education Edition this term at Sandringham College has provided students with another platform to further develop their creativity, along with their collaboration and problem solving skills. A majority of students chose to complete their games as part of this assessment on Minecraft: Education Edition.
