10-12 Campus News

10 - 12 Campus News

As I sit to write this newsletter, the loss of Danny Frawley from his family, friends and the football community is very prevalent in the news. His passing has once again shone a light on anxiety and mental issues, particularly depression in males. Days like our recent R.U.O.K. (are you okay) day at Sandringham College and our 'Anxious Age' seminar try to highlight the little things that we can do to help.  From open and frank conversations among family and friends to asking the simple question, R.U.O.K., of peers and acquaintances; little things can make a difference.  Our condolences go out to the Frawley family and to all those families in and around our community that have experienced this type of loss.  If you or someone you know needs help, contact BeyondBlue on 1300 224 636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.

I would like to acknowledge the amazing work that continues here at all levels of Sandringham College in supporting our students.  We have an amazing wellbeing team and a group of caring and compassionate staff.

Senior School

My congratulations joins the many accolades for Matilda. Laura Washington and her immense team of staff and parents have once again come together to offer our students a world-class production experience. Sell-out crowds, dazzling lighting, incredible sets, barely noticeable amplification (that’s a good thing), combined with a cast and crew that shone from the opening scene to the last joyous bow, made for an amazing night of theatre.

The senior school has also hosted some powerful outdoor experiences for our students in the past few weeks. Downhill snow sport, hikes, and cross-country skiing all featured in an active term.

VCAL students are building up towards their small business day on the first Monday of next term. Discovering the delights of dealing with external factors, unanswered emails, and obligatory date changes have all been a part of the learning process for this terrific group of young adults.  For many of our year 12 VCAL students, I am starting to see the readiness for next steps in their professional lives; I can see the hunger in their eyes for a success that they know can only come with hard work, persistence, and a positive mindset.

Academics remains a focus at the senior school and as we head towards the September non-instructional period (often referred to as a ‘holiday’) we see the importance of the foundational work completed by students to this point.  Good study habits, a gritty determination and some all-important time management can build substantially on this learning foundation in the weeks to come.

As I recover from yet another poor round of golf last weekend I am reminded of this quote:

“The more I practice, the luckier I get.”

U.S. Professional Golfer, Gary Player

I encourage all of our senior school students to set high expectations on their own success. I hope that it is understood that the harder you work now, the better your results will be.

‘The more effective study I get done now, the better my results will be’.

100++ golfer, David Hall

Perhaps not as catchy as Gary’s quote but the message is still clear: keep working hard, seek help when you need it, and know that we are all walking beside you.

Year 12 Trial Exams

A reminder that compulsory Trial exams for students completing VCE Unit 4 subjects will be held on Friday 20th September and during the first week of the school holidays from Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th September. The schedule has been placed on Compass and students will receive their own copy at an assembly on Monday 9 September. All Unit 4 students must attend this important preparation for their final exams.  Where a student is ill during the holidays and unable to do so, please provide a medical certificate and contact the Head of School 10-12 Campus, David Hall, email: Hall.David.D2@edumail.vic.gov.au

Catch up exams will be organised where possible on a later day that week or on Monday 7th October after school in the SAC centre.

Year 10 and 11 exams will be held on 14th to 20th November. A timetable will be available early in Term 4.

VCE Final Examinations

The VCE Exam timetable and other advice has been posted on the VCAA website, individual timetables and Exam Navigator advice booklets will also be distributed in the assembly held on Monday 9th September. The VCAA website link:

Special Exam Arrangements  for Year 12 students

If a student has developed an ongoing health condition that is going to affect his or her ability to complete their final exams, please contact Sheryl Burgess, the VCE Coordinator, as soon as possible to obtain advice about how to apply to VCAA for special exam arrangements. Specific medical evidence is required and a form submitted to VCAA for approval. Some students already have special arrangements in place for the year and they will have received official notification from VCAA.

Emergency exam arrangements

In the two week period leading up to the final external exams, including those for Performance and Languages Other Than English, there are emergency arrangements that can be set in place if a student should become ill or experience a traumatic event or accident. The VCAA encourages all students to attend their examinations, except where there is specific medical evidence advising against a student sitting an examination. Contact the school as soon as possible and suitable arrangements will be organised to support the student. Medical or other appropriate documentation will need to be provided.  Emergency arrangements should be considered the first option.

A Derived Examination Score (DES) may be approved for a student who is ill or affected by a personal trauma or ‘serious intervening event’ to the extent that their examination result is unlikely to be a fair and accurate indication of their learning achievement in that area of the examination.

A personal trauma may include but is not limited to the death, serious illness, or an accident involving a family member, or family breakup. A serious intervening event may include but is not limited to an accident on the way to or at an examination, attendance at a funeral of a family member or other person of close relationship, or the required attendance at a court proceeding.

Students should always attempt to sit an examination if possible, as a DES may not be granted. Please note that the decisions regarding emergency arrangements and to grant or withhold a DES are made by the VCAA, not the school.
