Specialist News

In the Social Wellbeing room we have been talking about diversity, within the community, the classroom and our families. We have also been discussing Harmony week, which is celebrated throughout Australia in a week-long celebration of cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. It is about celebrating the benefits of our multicultural society that has come about as the result of the successful integration of migrants into the Australian community. Every year in March, Australians come together to mark Harmony Week, culminating in the observance of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on the 21st of March. The Foundation students have been discussing what is the same and different about themselves and their classmates. Years 1 and 2 have been talking about how to be inclusive when they are in the yard and see a students on their own. The Middle school of years 3 and 4 have been creating a new image to replace Harmony Day, it needed to demonstrate inclusivity and everyone belonging. While the year 5 and 6 students have been discussing how when we stereotype and show a prejudice we can discriminate. As well as a look at how advertising has changed over the years to be more inclusive of all genders and races.

House Athletics  - Year 3, 4, 5 & 6

On Friday 24th March we held our annual House Athletics Carnival. It was a day filled with loads of colour and laughter.  Every single student should be proud of giving it a go and displaying the school values.

A special mention to our parent volunteers and past students who came and assisted on the day also, without you events like this wouldn't happen.

It was a very close contest with the lead changing after each event.

In 4th place on 446 points….Biik

In 3rd place on 461 points…Baany

In 2nd place on 463 points…Munmut

In 1st place on 496 points…Wiiny.

Congratulations Wiiny.

The carnival also acts as selection trials for the District Carnival which is taking place in June. Students who have been successful will be notified next term.

Melbourne Demons Football Club Clinic

On Tuesday 28th March we were very lucky to have Max Gawn (captain), Charlie Spargo and Kye Turner from the Melbourne Football Club come and conduct a Q & A session followed by a clinic. The year 5 and 6 students loved this opportunity with some of them going head to head in a variety of challenges such as; biggest kick, push ups, plank, furthest kick and a sprint race.

We have also been given access to 3 game family memberships. Scan the QR code for more information.

District Cross Country

All the best to the 45 students attending the District carnival on Wednesday 5th April. We look forward to hearing how to you go and will update everyone with the results in the first newsletter next term.

Junior House Athletics

On Thursday 6th April all foundation, year 1 and year 2 students will be participating in a mini athletics carnival. The students will get to run a  race and then complete a variety of fun novelty events under the guidance of their House Captains. They are allowed to wear their sports top on this day to show their House spirit.

Nature Play - the students have been very creative the last couple of weeks. We have created a mosaic style Bunjil in a tree and then we went outside to see if we could build a nest as good as a bird. As the students said "it's a birds nest, so of course they are going to be better at it!"

Kitchen Garden

The Year 3's have been working hard in the garden picking all the tomatoes and apples that are very delicious. They have also being learning about seeds and participated in a dissection of a bean seed.

In the kitchen the Year 4's used all the tomatoes from the garden to make salsa and nachos, they were amazing.

Environmental Science

Finally the weather was sunny enough for the Year 5/6 students to test their solar ovens. The aim was to bake a cookie and measure the temperature inside the oven. It was a very successful afternoon with one of the ovens reaching 70 degrees! The cookie dough didn't exactly bake all the way through but students reported that they were a bit crispy and hot.

APPLE - MANIA

The rain was falling but that did not stop us from the apple harvest. Net's were taken off and the picking began, our two beautiful apple trees yielded over 150 apples! After picking they were washed and dried and then tasted. Nothing beats home grown produce.

Foundation

Students investigated textures, brainstorming lots of words to describe textures such as spiky, rough, smooth, soft, furry and prickly.  They used pastels to rub over textured plates to reveal a different pattern and the illusion of texture.

Students also had fun painting their hands and making handprints on our giant letter P for Positivity!

Junior School

Grade 1 amd 2 students learnt about Indigenous Art and the use of symbols to tell a story. They created a piece of artwork using markers, aboriginal symbols and dot painting to tell their family story.

Middle School

Grade 3 students used paper clay to form colourful bowls. They are on display in the foyer if you'd like to check them out!

Year 4 students completed their artworks inspired by dutch artst Piet Modrian using primary colours and vertical and horizontal lines.

Senior School

Students investigated the Japanese style of art focsung on positive and negative space called NOTAN ART.  The exercise used maths skills including identifying the line of symmetry and flip, slide, turn. Students were challenged by drawing only half a shape to form a whole shape represented as postive and negative space. They have also begun a new project making a wire sculpture.

Grade 5/6 have also enjoyed painting our giant letter P's for our display later next term.
