Westgarthtown and Hockey Clinic
Our Westgarthtown Recount
On Tuesday the 22nd of March the Year 2’s went on the bus to Westgarthtown. Liam, Katie, Marcus and Taneesha were so excited to take the students on their first excursion!
When we arrived at Westgarthtown, a man named John greeted us and showed us around the settlement. The Year 2’s got to visit a farmhouse from the 1850’s, a very old cemetery and a church. We also went for a walk around Westgarthtown to see other houses that were built in the 1850’s.
John took all of the students around the farmhouse to show us how the houses were made and how the people lived. We learned that in the 1850’s men and women had very different jobs. That is very different to now in 2022.
Before we went back on the bus, we all sat down in the beautiful gardens and sketched the surroundings.
The Year 2’s learnt all about how the community has changed.
The students recorded lots of facts that they found interesting:
Mason – Nails for the houses were made from cannonballs and were melted down.
Alexis – Herbs from the garden were used to help people when they were sick.
Aleks – There was no air conditioners in the house. They used to open the doors and windows.
Emma – John told us a joke. He said “how do you get down from an elephant? You don’t get down from an elephant, you get it from a duck”. I learnt that down is used to make doonas.
Pranadh – The men used bluestones from the ground to build houses. They used water, cow poo, grass and dirt to make the cement.
Elise – People used candles to walk to bed safely.
Rhys – Men used sticks of dynamite to knock down a tree.
Jackson – People used a special pot to go to the toilet in the middle of the night.
Macie – for entertainment people played the piano and danced in the living room.
Year 2 Hockey Clinic
The Year 2 students enthusiastically participated in the Hockey Program at our school. During the clinic we learnt the basic skills needed to play hockey. These include stickhandling, passing the ball, hitting the ball and a flat stick tackle. Once we had practised these skills we played hockey games where we worked in small teams and challenged each other to win the game! We had a lot of fun learning how to play the game of Hockey!
Destan – I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this sport because it was something new.
Isaac– The hockey was really fun because we played a dinosaur game and stole some eggs.
Aubrey – I learned how to move the ball pretty fast with a hockey stick.
Keira – I had so much running with the ball and stick.
