Student Review

Written by Zachariah C, Nash C, and Eliza R

This term in Year 10 has been very eventful with athletics day, love bites, VET/Trade Taster programs and volleyball.

During athletics day, nearly all the student leadership team ran fun activities for everyone to engage in and all year 10’s showed up in their best outfits in their team colours.

The Love Bites incursion was about respectful relationships, and we did a case study analysis on Angela; a girl who was in an abusive relationship and was being abused by her boyfriend Dale. During Love Bites we also explored the several types of abuse in different relationships and consent.

On Wednesdays and Tuesdays students have been attending their VETs (Vocational Education and Training) – the ones that our peers have chosen are Animals Studies and the Trade Taster.

“At the Trade Taster we have been doing carpentry and learning how to make mortis intendant joints and a biscuit joint and we are also getting our white card,” – Natalie T / Levi C. “At Animal studies we have learnt how to do a check up on an animal, how to handle animals and how to wash animals, we got to wash Silkie Chickens and blow-dry them,”- Nash C / Maddison N

The Year 9s and 10s boys' and girls' volleyball teams played at interschool sports.

“Our team played pretty well on the day but with the lack of height on the team we struggled against a full team of year 10s, they dominated the competition,”- Nick T“Our team played well, but unfortunately lacked in communication. We played 5 games and won 2 games, “– Jessica D

In English, we have been learning about persuasive language, our first CAT  was a language analysis where we compared two articles and their persuasive devices.

In our Math class we have been working on angles, area, and financial maths. We have also completed our CAT where we designed a cat and calculated the surface area using our newly founded skills.

In the Music class students have researched jobs in the music field and their career pathway. After that we found an instrument that we would like to learn researched some basic things about said instrument, then we chose a song that used that instrument and learnt desired song.

“Music this term has been fun and collaborative working with the year 9s learning a group song, in our class we have also been learning our individual songs I have been learning how to play saxophone”- Nash C

In Science, classes 10B and 10C started with learning physics, forces, and newtons laws once we completed that we started on out project where we designed and created a vehicle that was powered in a unique way and see how forces and physics impacted the movement of the vehicle. The other class, 10A, started learning psychology where they studied social psychology, mental health and now stalkers.

“Getting to know how we react to certain things that happen is my favourite part of psychology,” – Paige J

In our Materials class, we learnt about the dangers in the workspace, then we started restoring a chair for the front office they will be used by guests, students, and teachers. The chairs have been designed in a certain way to fit in place, we have learnt many new skills that can be applied in the workspace and in our future lives.

My favourite part of materials is the part where we do practical stuff and not the research,” – Zachariah C

In Health and Human Development, we have been learning about Respectful Relationships and the Dimensions of Health. We have learned about the dimensions of health which are; Physical, Social, Mental, Spiritual and Emotional. In Legal Studies, we were researching political parties, made our own political parties and presented them to the class. The Anti-War party won!! They also were learning about the government systems.

In applied computing, we have looking at data and sorting data using excel we also did a presentation on researching specific types of data.

“I like computers and doing research on data” – Dylan K

In Visual art we have learnt about different photography skills and drawing techniques. During our class on photography, we have discussed the variety of composition techniques and contrast, as we developed a deeper understanding on how and why we use them. We are currently learning about contour drawing and painting by practicing styles and eventually making a piece through our experience.

“My favourite part about art is being able to express yourself no matter how experienced you are in the subject” – Kim

In Food Studies this term, we have focused on the food properties and different cooking methods. For our CAT, we had to produce both a main meal and a dessert that would be suitable for a long-haul flight. We then had to cook these meals in our 2-hour session, in our groups of 2 or 3. Going into next term, we will be focusing on food sustainability and have already begun this unit.

“I really enjoyed learning about the properties of an egg. I forgot the egg in one of my dishes that we cooked and as a result I learnt that egg acts as a binding ingredient.” – Charlotte A
